More Garage Sale bliss! Scott and Altec.

Someone asked a while back if folks actually find Tube gear at garage sales. At the time I would have said probably not. My mistake. This mornings haul was an early Scott 299 with the gold face and all the original metal knobs and a pair of Altec Lansing 605Bs. $20 for each piece. I was so excited I forgot to ask the guy if he had the cross overs for the speakers. Called him back and he said he does have some crossovers in storage but does not know if the are the ones for these speakers. Anyone know what the correct part number is for the matching crossovers?

This is my first tube hi fi vintage gear and I'm really excited about it. I'll be posting for some help in checking out the speakers.

Thanks for the comments. Yes, no typo. It was actually $55 for everything. I knew the Altec's were something special when I saw them. Evidently they are "more special" than I really knew at the time. Probably good or I may have not been able to contain my enthusiasm. :).

I"m already thinkin' about building some plexiglass cabinets. It would be a shame to hide those pretty blue frames in a wood cabinet :).

Man! Look at that output iron. :drool: You've got what looks like a gassy tube, but what the heck. That amp is deserving of a first class no holds barred resto. :thmbsp: and I thought I did good today getting a Amperex BB tube for 20 bux. :D
 
Well, that is a score for the books. If I found those at a garage sale, I'd probably pass out from hyperventilating before I could get the cash out of my wallet.

I need to start looking too. I'm just too lazy to get up early on weekend mornings. I do O.K. with pawn shops, thrift stores, and flea markets, though. A recent find was a Spectro Acoustics 200R power amp for $40 at a pawn shop in Bossier City, La.. All it needed was a fuse.
 
One or the other would of been a great find in itself. But both, now thats one of those finds tht only happen in a blue moon. :thmbsp:

Didn't a similar pair of Altec coaxials go for mucho dinero on eBay a while back?

Looks like one for the record books.
 
thanks for all the great comments! I'm going to put these Altecs up for now and call "great plains audio". Probably send them in for new cones and remagnatizing. I haven't pulled the tube tester out yet to check them yet but the 299 has Telefunken 12ax7s and HHscott drivers (mullard?). The 7189s are a mixture of Radio Shack lifetimes and RCA with one of the RCA obviously broken.

I've got to finish my current project of overhauling my Marantz SS stuff but restoring these units are next in line.

Do yourself a favor....

and bide your time waiting for a nice set of NOS 7189's....
Maybe a nice quad of Amperex or similar. They will add to the total cost of the unit, but will be well worth it...:music:....:thmbsp:
