Wow! What a score! I remember coveting the Scott back in the day. When I was growing up in Chicago (circa 1957 to 1961) there was big Audio Electronics store on the north west corner of Western and Washington. Allied something or other? Can't remember the name but I spent a lot of time in there wishing. I specifically remember the Scott driving some big a** speakers, Klipsch or something. I've been pretty lucky myself recently so I shouldn't be to jealous.....should I?

I say if they say Altec on them then get them!
Why recone them? If you're thinking of converting them to 604s it might be wise to wait until you hear them as 605s first. The 605 is less sensitive but is supposed to have better bass response. I've only heard 604Gs (briefly) and I thought they were bass shy even in 10 cubic foot cabinets.

Thanks for the input. I've been educating myself on Altecs over the past few days. You can't convert these to 604s. 604s although simular are a completely different speaker. I'll probably get them reconed because the surrounds are showing their age and according to the Altec experts at Great Plains Audio you can't simply replace the surrounds.
Even though the may go down further than a 604 I'm not expecting huge bass out of these speakers. From what I can gather they are more known for their imaging and detail.
Sadly the guy I got them from won't return my phone calls in my efforts to get the crossovers. Could be he looked them up on the internet and is a little miffed over what he sold them to me for. I've still got my fingers crossed. Elsewise i'll be building some crossovers. Supposidly there are designs that are better than the originals anyway.

They'll make big bass, no sweat.
The stock crossover is the 1600C.
Jeff Markwart has 605 crossover design on his site, it's said to be a very good design.

I use my 605s bi-amped, active crossover set at 1600hz; Teac T-amp on the highs and a big-hog QSC on the woofers. I use a simple RC compensation network to extend the highs. Things sound gorgeous. Big tone and big image, wrap around at times, wierd.
How are the surrounds showing their age? If it's just the goop running don't worry about it.

One of the surrounds has some holes in it. It looks like something adhered to the goup and when removed tore a couple of holes. The other speaker drags a bit. (I think its just got some dirt down in there and can be cleaned out). In any event its only $117 per speaker for new cones that are exact replacements so I figure thats a slam dunk easy decision. Then I know they are right.
Its interesting your driving them with a QSC. I have a QSC USA-1300 amp in the garage. Its rated at like 400 watts per into 8 ohms. So it should have plenty of output voltage to drive a 16 ohm speaker. My quick pencil to paper showed the QSC ought to deliver around 150 Watts per channel into 16 ohms.
Incidently GPA said the new cones would be good for about 150 per channel so that about right.
My plans are to use these with tubes. But if they will really take that kind of power it might be fun to play with them on some SS stuff too.

Steve---The 605s are in old Barzilay cabinets, vented, about 6 cubic feet.
Each cabinet has a pair of rectangular vents as can be seen in the photo I took when I was gonna ebay them, I'm glad I kept them.

Well thats encouraging! Only 6 cubic feet. You already said you get large bass out of them in that cabinet so thats cool. I was thinking it was going to take 9 to 10 cubic feet to do these things justice. I migh have to hit you up for more specific dimensions. Those are some nice looking cabinet, better than most I've seen.

It's been my understanding that the cheif difference between the 604 and 605 is the phase relationship between the HF and LF voice coils in the vertical plane, acheived by using shorter magnet structures. The compromise is a few db of sensitivity................ something most big altecs can easily afford.

Were they designed specifically for the 605, or were they aimed at both 604 and 605?
