most creative album covers

We have done this one (or something very similar) before, but...

I'll second anything by Roger Dean. Yes covers especially, but also Uriah Heap and Asia. Regardless of one's opinion of the quality of Asia's music.

Same goes (I hate to say it) for Journey's Escape. Yes, it's overplayed old pop, but the cover is cool.

Don't forget Flash. Those covers were remarkable for the day. Still have my copies. Think I'll go take a look for old times sake. Maybe I'll even play one! :huge: :huge:

Wow! So many great covers. I always liked this one, though...it's the original cover for "Yr" by Steve Tibbetts. When ECM released it on CD many years later, they put a basic photo of rocks there! Maybe ST sanctioned that new cover, but this is the original, and Steve Tibbetts drew it!

Great album, too...

sparktone - I agree about Hipgnosis -- this one's probably my favorite.

BTW, welcome to "AK Colorado"!

A very good friend and former roommate went to college up your way and keeps his ties to that place. I've only been there a few times, but my impression was: really nice town, really good people.

As mentioned, Hipgnosis created some great covers---does anyone recall their word on the Audience LPs, House on the Hill and Lunch, which feature cool retro (even then) staged, stylized photos.

My nomination, however, goes for Family's Fearless LP cover, the most creative of their covers (though Bandstand is a solid second). Back when using lots of paper and cardboard was not an issue, the album's designers used layered paging to create a 10-page foldout sleeve featuring small band photos arrayed in 10 variations with each band member's photo running diagnally down the center of the cover and a composite in the upper right-hand corner, under the band's name "Family." The artwork is quite stark in some ways, set on a stark white background, with blue ink for the photos, the band's name, and the album's title and then a narrow red stripe, a bit more white space, a thicker red line that bleed off the top and right.

It's a hefty album, and the CD pales not only pales by comparison but fails to acknowledge who the designer was. My LP copy is stored at the moment or I would find out who created this cover (and will eventually).

Here's a couple of covers similar to Family's Fearless LP cover.
...and your right, Hipnosis created some great covers. :thmbsp:
