Most popular speaker on AK

However, at the back of my mind, have always wondered if a pair of "QUAD" ESL-57 electrostatic speakers might have produced superiour sound. Since their advent, this British made speaker has continued to evolve, and I'm sure can hold their own against what others can produce today.

If memory serves me right, the "QUAD's" produced a neutral sound with much detail and clarity, but with the need of a sub-type speaker for the low end.
I just bought a pair of ESL-63s, one working fine, the other needing some repairs, for $300. I'll be doing the repairs myself- done it before, back in the 90s. I always loved the sound of ESLs. I used to build my own ESLs and had quite a nice system with active crossovers and bass drivers in boxes. I may end up biamping the Quads - if you keep the low notes out of them they can play as loud as anyone would ever need.

Well, I turned to Microsoft co-pilot ... their version of AI ... to ask the question. This what they said:

"One of the most popular vintage stereo speakers is the Klipschorn by Klipsch. It's renowned for its folded horn design, which provides exceptional sound quality and efficiency. The Klipschorn has been in continuous production for over 60 years, making it a true classic in the world of audio equipment(1)."

"Other notable mentions include the JBL L100, Acoustic Research AR-3, and KEF 104/2. These speakers are cherished for their unique designs and the warm, rich sound they produce(2)."

So, Klipschorn is the most popular! We all have them, of course.
Alternately, we all love the JBL L100 for its "warm, rich sound"

haha

Popular? I would expect the KLH 6, NLA of Dynaco A25 to have been mentioned. I have had all three, multiple pairs actually. Certaintly not the best available - but popular, yes.

Keep in mind to later share how those "63's" worked out. Well worth the "$300" spent, and nice if you don't have to farm-it-out!

The ak community has collected a few different high volume produced speakers/brands.

aDs, ads, a/d/s/ the whole lineup
Advent many models
Acoustic Research many models
Dynaco.

and many more. Gonna be a long list.

I have 9 pairs of Boston Acoustics, 6 in the A series. Have had 6 pairs of Advents, actually like the Legacy series better than the ones with the fried egg tweeter.

In my list I hadn’t even gotten to the Bs except the over half million made Dynaco A25.

Pick a popular brand, there will be piles of them in aker’s homes.
pick begins with P so Polk represents.

Lemme see...down to 7 "Polks" now, but 5 are part of my TV set-up.

They go to my grave with me. Gotta keep listening, right? :dunno:

Well if A.I says it. It must be true. There must be a lot more Klipschorn speakers out there than I thought. I feel a little sad now, because I have never even heard the most popular speaker. (Klipschorn) haha.

I just think if you ask the people on AK which speakers they own. And asked people on the streets, neighbors, Facebook, etc. You would find that the ones that aren’t on AK probably never heard of some of the speakers we have. Would I be wrong?

Not at all.

Even with electronics many on ak don't go beyond a few of the most popular today brands. Many who bought gear new never went into the sound room at stores where the good stuff was and those brands (other than top models from the popular names) are unknown.

I would say 9 out of 10 people that I know, have never heard of KEF 105 or Ads 1230, large Advent, or even Klipsch Klipschorn. Could even Possibly 10 out of 10.

You're right, if I mention vintage speakers around here people think I'm talking about Pioneer or Kenwood..farthest thing from my mind
