mouser.com did well by me

Just a little anecdote for your'all's edification.

Back around the beginning of December I had a few projects going and I put together a parts order at Mouser. As it wasn't a lot of stuff, and I wasn't in a big hurry, I cheaped out and opted for the economy shipping.

The expected delivery date came and went. I emailed them to confirm shipment. That's when I learned that economy shipping isn't only slower, it lacks detailed tracking. So they couldn't be sure where it was, but they'd been having some orders take longer than expected lately because of holiday mail. No problem. But then it dragged on to over three weeks and I wrote back again. They apologized for the wait, said I'd been very patient, and re-filled the order at no charge, as well as upgrading the shipping to UPS standard.

That replacement package arrived Monday and I got back into one of the projects. And Tuesday? You guessed it - there was the lost package too, which had taken 33 days to get here!

I didn't open the other box right away and instead replied again to Mouser's customer service, offering to return it unopened for restocking. Their response came quickly: I could do what I wanted with it, they were just sorry I'd had to wait in the first place.

Sure, I guess they'd already written off that box, and you know how it is, nobody wants more paperwork -- but in the end I feel I was treated more than fairly. It wasn't their fault that the first package was delayed. Well, probably not, who knows. Mental note: next time I'll pony up for standard shipping.

I have ordered a lot of stuff from Mouser over the years. I've never had a single problem with them. I almost always use the FedEx 2-day shipping option. It has worked well for me.

I've also had great experience with Mouser. I forgot to order a cap and called the next day to try and tack it on to my original order (yes I was that annoying customer) only to find out my original order was already shipped out. They ended up sending me the capacitor for free with no shipping charge. Totally above and beyond.

yes I was that annoying customer

Hah... that's how I felt. I ended up getting some free parts just because I had been a cheapskate about shipping during a holiday rush and it had (unsurprisingly, in retrospect) gone awry. They didn't have to do that.

Yesterdays order in less than 24 hours free Fed Ex to Canada ,$100.00 min. Great company. Digi Key also same deal.

I got an order one time with 4 engineering samples from raspberry pi, in the box. Wifi enabled microcontrollers called the feather. I didnt have use for em, so i gave them to my friend who plays with microcontrollers whos name is feather. They have always done right by me. Ive never had a part from them fail due to a defect. Ive toastd a few on my own, but the stuff they send, is what they say it is.

Both Digikey and Mouser are great companies to deal with. Only problem part I has was with an LED from Mouser. Told them of the failure and they said, too long since the order. It is a part on the shelf for when I need to use them rebuilding BMW OBC light bars. I don't have a QC dept to check all incoming parts for quality. So I'm out a 15¢ but they have shipped a handful of caps when I ordered 10 so we are even.

But the shipping at Mouser...that sucks. I'll keep that discussion in the shipping sucks thread.

When they ship the wrong product it is more trouble to put it back into inventory than to let the customer keep it in many cases. Sure a nice desoldering kit maybe they would want it back but a handful of different caps, not really. Glad we have them to work with for our parts supply.

FWIW, I had a near-identical experience as Duncan, right down to the (eventual) double shipment. The order was placed Dec. 10, so I suppose holidays may have been a factor.

I had the same thing happen over the holidays. My package was marked as delivered using the tracking number but I didn't receive it. I called Mouser and they offered to send another order free of charge. I told them we should wait for a week or so because of the holiday package delivery nightmare. About ten days later and no package, I was at the post office and thought I'd ask about it. They got on the computer and tracked exactly where the postman was when he marked it as delivered, right in my driveway. Got to thinking about it and opened front door and there it was leaning against the screen door. I had locked the screen door because I never use that door, but when I pushed it closed months ago, it must not have closed enough to latch. The postman latched it when he closed it and secured my package for nobody to steal.

If I may recycle the thread, I'd like to ask if anyone can comment on how credible Mouser's "on order" information is. I'm looking at some parts of which zero are in stock, but they say thousands are on order and expected in August. Should I believe them? The part is oddball enough that no U.S. suppliers seem to have any - that makes my Spidey sense tingle.

(It's an ALPS tact switch. Common as dirt if you don't want a fifth terminal to connect the metal part of the switch to ground. But I do. Or rather, McIntosh MR7084 designers apparently did, and I don't care to second-guess them.)

Thanks!

I can only give some anecdotal evidence that they may be okay. At one point I found a specific relay that I need but it was "on order" and zero available. I never made the order but a few months pass and I checked that order I never placed and sure enough, they had some.

I still haven't made the order big enough to make it worthwhile to order but as time goes on I see their stock of this relay go up and down.

Right now I jury rigged a relay hence did not order, though it would be nice for a more permanent fix...

In general they handle gobs of stuff from lots of different suppliers so have a pretty good grasp on logistics.

That said, with all the stuff going on (or not), things can change in a heartbeat.

What other choice do you have but to order and keep your fingers crossed?

They are likely often at the mercy of the manufacturer. May get them early or the supplier may push back on the date. At least they give their latest projection like Parts Express does.

you should separate your paper/cardboard from your plastics/glass. This thread has nothing to do with mouser on order data and a separate thread with a title asking that question would get a load of responses to that specific question.

NBD tacking it onto the great delivery/porch pirate thread we got going but those that might have input to your question might not see your question.

Back to your ? Mouser places orders and gets estimated delivery dates from their suppliers. It is as accurate as they are provided. Sometimes the production is delayed or the order is broken down to multiple delivery dates nut the closer to delivery the more accurate it will be as the supplier updates the buyer. Have you checked other sources, too?

Well, the order is placed with Mouser, so I guess I'll know some time in August if the predicted delivery is on target in this case. Thanks for the mostly-reassuring input.

Mouser ship to me via UPS, to New Zealand, and the box arrives in less than a week - amazing.

The only thing they need to do in my eyes is lose the plastic bags - if the components came in their own little paper bags, that would be perfect. The bags are great for keeping stuff in order, but otherwise I hate the waste

While Mouser carries some items that Digikey does not,and oftentimes has better pricing, I haven't been happy with their service.
Between parts being back-ordered while listed as "In Stock",and regular delays before shipping,I'm not impressed.

By comparison,my latest Digikey order was submitted 2020-07-07 at 09:15 PM. Arrived 2020-07-09 at 04:08 PM. Not bad:)

It's been a while since I've ordered from Mouser but I've never had a problem.

That said, I mostly go with Digi-Key now because of their free shipping option. No minimum order, no handling charge, applies to US and Canada only. Here's details:
