If you want to use a step up device the use of a hi output moving coil is out. High output moving coils are designed to work in normal MM phono inputs.
The Denon 103 or 301 are typically used with a step up. The issue is always gain. Most MM sections Have 40 Db of gain and a MC step up device adds 20 more for a total of 60.
Current McIntosh phono sections are 40 Db except for the C220 which is 50. I can run the DL103 straight into my MX119 and get full power with the volume set at 90% using no step up. To run the older preamps this high is not practical as the signal to noise ratio is much lower and the preamp output will have way to much hiss.
Thanks,
