I am an extreme novice and bought these for my son who wanted to hook them up in his room to a stereo. Now I know it will require a couple more items. To make this as easy as possible can someone list what I would need to purchase from my local WalMart to hook these up in his room?

When I use Google to look up MTX Terminator 12 inch Subs,
I get a page of things on Amazon that look like Car Audio gear ...

Hooking them up to a standard stereo should not be a problem.
Not sure if it is wise.
Especially not knowing exactly what they will be hooked to.
Also, musical choice and volume level may be considerations as to powering them.

I'm thinking the subwoofer does not have any kind of Amp built in, so he needs an amp to power the speakers in that box.
I think that the easiest way to go is to get a standalone Plate amp from somewhere like Parts Express -
you would loop left and right channel speaker feeds from his stereo through the plate amp,
it taps off the low low frequency, and feeds it to the sub speakers in the box.
Its mean to be wall outlet powered, and looks to be on sale for under $100

and get something more like a hi fi/home theater sub ...

Awesome idea. So if his current stereo does not have speaker wire that disconnect, I would have to buy him another stereo that does have speakers that are detachable? Does that make sense?

The Devil made me do it.
Get thee to a proper electronics dealer with knowledgeable and helpful salespeople and technical staff (this excludes Bestbuy and Walmart) to assist you. They'll be able to show you what to do. Either return the car subwoofers or save them for when the kid gets a car.
Pretty much - but if his current stereo doesn't have separate speaker wires -
better to return the MTX speaker sub thingee and get a system with built in sub, or start smaller.
my first Sub was an $80 Sony sub from best Buy that went boom boom when I watched movies with boom boom sounds ...
Cut the speaker wires from current stereo at the midway point between the speakers and the stereo, then use wire strippers (or scissors, gently) to remove the plastic sheathing at the ends of each cut section to expose about 1" the to 1/2" of bare wire:
Then, if you get the plate amp that hjames suggested, you plug in the ends coming from the stereo into the "From Amplifier" section of the plate amp. Then plug the ends from the speakers into the "To speakers" connections.

As everyone has suggested though, it's probably easier to return the MTX subs and get a $100 home theater sub off craigslist, will probably sound better too.

Get him an all-in-one stereo system with speaker terminals (those red and black spring clip things) on the back. Maybe he already has one. Inexpensive is key. He can plug his creations/experiments into that.
Next he will need some basic hand tools and some materials to make boxes out of.
Enthusiasm will take care of the rest, and the Internet will provide shortcuts.
And keep the MTX subs, he's going to want them when he gets a car!

I agree with Farmhand. Sometimes it easier and cheaper to start from scratch rather than trying to make do with what you have.
