Multiple Question Marks

speidi1

Mike in AZ
I probably shouldn't waste your valuable time with this post, but when I see a post with a question in the subject followed by multple question marks... well, if I was a bishop, I'd be looking for a stained glass window to kick out.

It grates on my nerves to that extent.

So kill me.

Oh... and have a nice day.

Mea culpa.

I'll try to avoid this sin in the future, but as most posts are misspelled, ungrammatical, non-punctuated, and uncapitalized, it seems a very small faux pas.

Having said this, I expect we'll see some much larger ones any time now...

I agree about the hyperbole generated by multiple "?" or "!" marks.

I think that the errors in postings are inevitable as many folks write on the fly or do not consider forums such as these as a polished media. Of course, some may not know the rules of grammar and punctuation or care to follow them.

Another matter may the the advent of text messaging (which I do not use) which relies on shortcuts and ignores the fundamentals of good writing in favor of using codes.

If the proper number of question marks were used, the internet would speed up 456%.

It's science. I read it on the internet.

Seriously, of course, who the hell cares.

MISTYPING AND LIKE PRACTICES ARE FARELY MINOR WEREALL FREIDNS HIR RIT???

This forum is a community of sorts, we lower our language to a like register as we use with friends. No one here (pompous ones aside) goes out of their way to type at a raised level saved for reports, bosses, and the like. So why does it matter, though too much is still annoying, like those all cap posts or all lowercase. I'd rather save my ire for those who cannot respect others' opinions or accept that what one likes audio-wise may not apply for others and forget about one too many question marks.

Good advice. I'll give it a shot.

JP, I'm a lawyer. How could I be anything but pompous and still be in business?

It seems to me that this thread just made another bunch of people afraid to write in the forums.

Not all of us are the best spellers or have the proper use of grammer. Myself included in that catagory.

Guess I am gonna have to quit writing as not to piss a few people off. Or is it have to quit writing to not piss off a few people.

Oh well, back to reading again. There's just to much **** going on in the world to worry about this stuff.

But again....Oh yeah, we should never start a sentence with but. But again its a free country so I guess we all have the right to bitch. :scratch2:

Does anyone really say, "Ending a sentence with a preposition is something up with which I will not put"?

Eric, quit worryin'. The whole point is that people post however they want. Some can't spell, some can't type, and some type too much (like me). The only rule that needs to be observed is that we have to be able to read it without too much brain damage. This is because most of us just can't take too much more brain damage. :D

i use all lower case, except for proper names, because it is more comfortable for me. i've done it since i started communicating online in the bbs days and am too old to think about changing my ways.

Eric if you stop posting due to people whining about spelling it will make me so mad I may go POSTAL.

So out of concern for your fellow man you have to continue to post otherwise I won't be responcable for my actions!
