Music to Judge bass response

The opening of "Thus Sprach Zarathustra" - Reiner and the CSO. Get the "new vinyl" released by QRP - great recording. The first passage was miked AT the tympani - and includes an organ and the hall "resonance". Fantastic musical bass. You should be able to hear the "body" of the tympani (and not just the skin).

For CD try "Dark Knight". The first track gets down into the twenties. A bass weak system will go silent for about 8 seconds when the low frequencies are played. But this is not a "musical" instrument - this is synthetic sound created by who knows what. Nevertheless - it is gut wrenching on a good system.

Pictures at an Exhibition by Lorin Maazel and the Cleveland Orchestra on Telarc, vinyl especially, sacd next and cd is ok but not quite as good as vinyl or sacd.

most of the kraftwerk but especially Electric Cafe.

How could I forget this one? :screwy: ????? "Flight of Victory"!!!!!!! It's a bass solo on the Mortification album Post Momentary Affliction. This is the very best bass solo I've ever heard! Steve Rowe is one of the finest bassist alive today and this solo is simply amazing! Even if you're not into metal, you'd probably enjoy this. :thmbsp::yes:
 
So much for the talk to text. What I wanted to say was the bass solo in "Cause We've ended As Lovers" from Jeff Becks "Live From Ronnie Scotts" is my favorite to judge bass response by. You can hear the bass players fingers on the bass. The unmistakeable sound of a fretless bass. And anything with Victor Wooten..

Peter Gabriel loves bass in many of his songs. LoveTown does it best and will test your speakers at 30-50 watts....my AR 303's shine on it.....goes low.

I'll recommend the same tune I always do in these threads, "Jump Into the Fire" by Harry Nilsson off the Nilsson Schmilsson album. A great test for woofer excursion, especially the part where Herbie Flowers unwinds his E string.
 
All music. Hard say for me. I love hard deep bone rattling bass at times but other times not big deal cause I like all types music. For deep bone rattling bass it can be anywhere from pipe organs, lowest note of a piano, some good ol' 90's bass beat tracks like bass 305 or some rap and different types of electronic music...

If you want to hear the quality of bass, then use any music that is familiar to you. If you want to hear depth of response, then I'd go for the opening of Mahler's 8th symphony or Strauss' "Also Sprach Zarathustra".
 
Alannah Myles Black Velvet has a good thump. The 1983 Digital Domain demo CD will make the dog poop on the carpet when the plane goes overhead.

I'll add to the many good suggestions already made:

Tower of Power - TOP - pretty much the whole album.
Sarah McLachlan - I Love You - this one has some deep bass, but in my experience, systems that can't handle it don't distort, the notes just aren't there. So if you're not familiar with it, you may not know what you're missing.
 
Taylor Dane - Original Sin, starting from the minute 1:54, approximately when this lyrical part starts.
