My ADS 5.1 HT Project

You got it!
I'm very hopeful it's a close match.

Yes sir, Ordered this afternoon. Fingers Crossed. And tons of thanks for finding it Glenn!! I gave up on online and went searching locally, which as I said before was a bust.

Oh, @porlkloin, I have been known to sneak a few gulp's of Nooner in the middle of a mow. Texas gets hot in the summer and sometimes, a mans gotta do what a mans gotta do! :beerchug:

Just a reminder, never use silicone in a sealed cabinet to seal it. It will off-gas as it dries and the resulting fumes deteriorates rubber and plastic within the cabinet. It can destroy butyl surrounds over time.

Do you have any examples of rubber or plastic parts being destroyed from this?

I have had surrounds and spiders on some Polk drivers turn gummy at the glue line and let loose. Not certain it was a rubber or cement interaction. I have also seen shrink tubing connection turn gummy inside a cab. I went to a construction adhesive or Loctite Power Grab variety of products that have a different base with no ill effects. It won't happen on ported cabs as much as they have a place for the gas to release in my experience. The first that I ran into this was building car audio boxes from scratch a couple decades ago. The adhesive options were much more toxic and limited at that time. Today's stuff is less so.

Spiceman, love the surrounds. Another project when I rebuild my L1230s. I already had plans for the center. The search is on for L810s with trashed cabs. Or I could upgrade to L1530s and use the L1230s to build the surrounds from......
I've heard that and wondered. Years ago, I re-attached the butyl surround to an aluminum cone with the thin silicone used to seal leaks around automotive windshields. They still play on a nightly basis (bedroom TV) to this day.

This is very close to the original.

I'll probably pick some up for my 910's.

I bought some black cloth from PE, but the weave was too fine and I used it on mt AR 12 grills which worked out quite well.

I had it shipped economy for no other reason other then I don't have time at present to do the grills, but if you get your swatch lemmy know how it looks. I have the center covered so the sticky domes don't collect dust, so I need to get on this soon. I still have to make the grill frames. Not hard on the Center, but gonna take a bit more doing them for the surrounds due to the 20 degree angle. It doesn't say stretch, so I wonder how the fabric will lay?

I just wanted to add that I now have a pair of L1230s in my basement as my home is being remodeled. They were purchased way back in the day at Waltham Camera and Stereo. I went in to the showroom and auditioned the L1530s against the L1230s and the bass was toooo tubby on the L1530s. I know Telarc used the L1530s to master some of there compact discs but I really had good hearing back then and the overall balance was superior on the L1230s. The amp was a Peraux excuse the spelling, and there was plenty of power so damping factor wasn't a problem. I am very familiar with the L1230s after years and years of listening to a wide variety of signals. They are great speakers and built like a f####n Tank. I started out going into 5.1 using the L1230s as my mains and Boston Acoustics A400s for the rear surrounds, and I used a Cambridge Soundworks center channel. I previously owned a pair or large Advents so I thought the Cambridge Soundworks would be a good choice. I always wanted to go all ADS. The factory was gone but I bumped into the internet and found out about Rich So and of course Ebay and then it was off to the races. Started out with a set of L810s for my rear surrounds, because of the similarity with the drivers and crossover points to the L1230s. Because they were not vertically aligned I was not happy having them left and right of my couch. The sound on the other hand was bass heavy and the imaging was incredible. I used to watch tv in 5.1 and when someone walked into a room I literally could hear the dimensions and accurate reverb. It truly was astounding to me. BUT the bass was tooo heavy. I then bought a pair of L1090s and put them in the rear channel. They were vertically aligned and sounded exceptionally clear but ok, a drop bass shy. Then next on the list I bought a pair of L1290/2s and had Rich rebuild them. They blended extremely well with the L1230s, and just to be clear here I did have the drivers rebuilt on the L1230s and L1090s by Rich, not the crossovers though. Then as an experiment I listened to the L1290/2s in two channel as well as the mains in 5.1 and I percieved a drop of clarity in the upper bass. I was sold and then it was a quest to put together a total L1290/2 5.1 system and I have after a big pain in the ass done that. I copied the center channel on Rich's website and now I am in the process of aquireing 4 more L1290/2s for height channel speakers in a Dolby Atmos setup. I currently am using 4 L300s but the volume is just not loud enough for me. I am using an Anthem P5 to drive all the L1290/2s and two refurbished Nikko Alpha 440s to drive the L300s. After seeing the work you have done Spiceman I am in Awe. My center channel sounds fantastic but the craftsmenship is second to yours. I really wish Rich would open a damn factory and start the production back up. The new speakers for the price are just not up to par. Trust me I am a music fanatic and movies as well with over 50 yrs listening to all kinds of signals. I used to own an analog synthesizer and the frequencies it put out were above and below my hearing. Yes time goes by but physics is physics and within the human senses these speakers litterally kick ass. Thank you Rich and get that fu###n factory going.
Us music lovers and movie lovers need you to give us the goods. Sorry for such a long post but truth be told.

That setup sounds like it's amazing!
We would love to see some pics of your setup when you get a chance.

I'm running a JVC A-X5 integrated connected to the TV, with a pair of KLH Fives as mains, and AR-4x's as fronts. I have to say, it sounds fantastic!
I have been thinking of possibly switching the speakers to all ADS's. Thinking L710's for fronts, and maybe L880's for mains. It may take some time to do this, if at all, and I wonder if this setup would be an improvement over my current setup.

Wow Plugto, standing with GD70 that sounds like an amazing set up. And what a great journey you took!!. High Fives to Sir Richard So, I've had a great relationship knowing him these past couple of years. It was his design I used for the center, only I inset the screws and putty'd the holes. I then bought some clamps for the surrounds and used a brad nailer (Brad nailers as much as they have positives, also have negatives when it comes to finishing). I understand the problem with the boomy'ness the L810's can produce. For the record, it's not a bad match with L1230's up front and using L710 for center and surrounds. The L710's have a slightly brighter top and less boomy at the bottom, in my experience. I got the chance to listen to a pair of them locally, but was already financially committed to the L810. If you ever get a chance go'head and have Richard do his wizardry on the Crossovers on those 1230's

When I started the process, I was using a Yamaha RX-V2700. After the Speakers were built, I upgraded the AVS to a Yamaha 3070. The results were AMAZING! My system is totally different now and with the added updated technology I'm able to adjusts levels and trim the bass to fit my listening pleasure. Where as I never liked 5.1 for music, I do now .. very much so. Also, you can always set the rears to small which sends the bass to the sub. Although, when I did that it seemed I also lost the midbase and reverted back to setting the surrounds to large. Same for the Center.

My Man Cave, is 25 x 25 and It shares space with a high performance gaming rig. Recently replaced SLI 870's (basically two hairdriers at full speed), with a single 1080 Ti video cards and a 30 inch 2k monitor. The video card change helped, but between my AV and Computer pumping volumes of heat in the room and a 65 inch 4k tv, I can't even begin to think of adding amps. I'd love too, I really would, but the heat is just too much. Right now I'm running everything at 8ohm and the Receiver is handling it astonishingly well. At -14db roughly 100 watts, I've not seen the amp getting hotter then 104 degrees after 4 or 5 hours. I don't know if that means anything to anyone, but thought to include it.

Say Glenn, if PE fails to send you a swatch, I'd be happy to send you one when I get my order.

I have an appointment tomorrow in Revere to audition another used pair of L1290/2s. 550$ if I use a credit card and 480$ if I pay cash. Last pair of these with the opening on the back not bottom, had a ferrofluid problem and I had to rebuild the entire system. I hope they aren't too clogged up. I at least can drive to the home and avoid shipping cost. I bought my main front pair on Ebay and they were black with the crossover located at the bottom. I still haven't had to rebuild this pair yet. No ferro fluid problem and drivers show no sign of abuse or exhibit any distortion. Picked them up in Connecticut. The pair I did a total rebuild on also came from Connecticut, but found them on Craigslist. They were walnut colored but I sanded them smooth and painted them black to match the front. I will have to do this to this pair if I get them. The wife is all pissy about my obsession, but when she watches movies she does appreciate all the effort. I am currently rebuilding my entire home with a total gut, and cutting the roof to go up an entire 3rd floor. It is a two family and I had to get a variance from the city to do it. I am currently on the second floor and when the first floor is complete we will move downstairs and the top floors will get done. I am going to have the luxury of building the theater room to help with the acoustics. My AV60 preamp from Anthem has a really nice room correction system and it helped me get much better control over the room gain problem. I spent hours sweeping frequencies to crossover my sub and to try to tame the boom in the room. Ended up with the THX 80 hz recommendation but could only go so loud before boom became obvious. My room is terrible right now. I got rid of my super thick rug because it got dirty and have all hardwood floors. Smooth plasterboard walls and two large picture windows. Get the picture? Echo chamber. Reflections everywhere, long decay rate, real pain to tame. After running the arc system I was amazed at the improvement. Bass is super heavy on the low end and I can play louder than before. The crossover was bumped up to 120hz. I still have all the surrounds and center as large. A little disapointed that I couldn't get it to sound this good on my own but computers are good at this measuring thing. The system uses a calibrated mic and runs a dwooip dwooip signal for each speaker as well as the sub. I then creates some kind of filter for each individual speaker alot more than just parametric eq. Works way better than my old Onkyo AVR with Audessy did. Every thing is now mothballed. My daughter moved back home and just had our first grandchild. All the wires had to be hidden and the rack will now have to be dismantled till we move back up when all is complete. I really miss playing the sound at the perfect level on a super good recording and hearing all the octaves and feeling the lowest bass in the floor all in tune and going right through my etire body with the clarity I have only heard from ADS. Using Roxul safe and sound for the entire house for insulation. And QuietRock 510 throughout the theater room and surrounding walls and ceilings. I will get a new super thick rug to help with the floor and some absorption panels for the walls. I will have the luxury of all new wiring and hidden as well. I was going to run conduit for the speaker wires so I could use some that is not wall rated. The inspector said a conduit would protect the wire.I guess the insulation material can give off fumes in case of fire. The Roxul is fire resistant so that should help. Have to figure out a way to mount 4 1290/2s on the ceiling. Once again wife is not happy about that, but I told her this is one room she has no control over and the rest of the house she can control. My little slice of heaven someday. Here is a couple of pics guys, but not the final solution yet.20170411_070753.jpg 20150521_191544.jpg 20150524_152643.jpg 20150525_101259.jpg 20150524_221122.jpg 20170411_070753.jpg 20150517_154650_resized.jpg 20170411_181322.jpg

Thanks Garry!
I spoke with a customer service rep and they said a swatch would be sent out the next day, but your offer is much appreciated! I hope it's close! The original ADS grill fabric is fairly robust.
Cheers, Glenn

Well you certainly have your hands full there and I have no doubt you will be very happy with the end result!
It will be interesting to see how you hang the 1290's!

Those look great. I was happy with an L400 for center and L300s for the rears. Now I wish I hadn't sold my 1230s.

Might just go with on wall. Need to experiment with hieght level before actually locking in position. Still can't get a straight answer from Dolby on bandwith for the hieght speakers. I have read alot of articles stating that the position is somewhat critical to get the best affect. A large article in Widescreen Review from the creator of Auro 3D and to high or to low ruins the effect. I love to tinker but sometimes wish it was easier. Either way I will get it done and I will share the end result.

Fabulous @plugto!!! .... Very nice Router work there, as one who's been though it, it's a challange for sure. Very impressed my friend. I can only imagine what that set up sounds like. Smiling from ear to ear reading about your project. I have an okay sized room for my setup, better room in the game room, but that would bother wife in living room, not that she would have any issues with it, but I try to be respectful of her quite space. I'm door locked on two corners of my man cave ... and speaker placement is difficult. One corner has a door to the hall, then next to that is a door to the patio.

No basements in Texas, so I just have to make due.

Haven't posted here in a couple weeks but I have to say kudos to all you do-it-yourselvers to come up with the designs and the woodworking know-how to get ADS surround systems!! I have been wanting to do something like this forever, I actually contacted Richard So a couple years back when I was having him redo the cones on a set of 1290s, I had seen the prototype ADS center speaker picture on his website and had asked him if he built those and were they for sale, but unfortunately not. I have zero woodworking skills or tools for that matter so if any of you decide to farm out your talent let me know! :D

Hey guys the wife nixed my last purchase. I guess hanging full size towers on ceiling or wall way too much for her. I have now decided to just build 4 more smaller boxes like the center channel and go with that. Spice the router took me a few tries, I practiced on some cheap plywood scraps I took home from work and when I was comfortable I attempted the actual MDF. Still screwed up and had to do the face or front twice. Never ever used a plunge router before. I got all the spec sizes of the box, depth height length on Rich's website. I got all the opening demensions from my own empty cabinet while the drivers and crossovers were at Rich's shop. Zunde I first got quotes from several cabinet makers and for the price they wanted and the sound I just had to have to match the other speakers it was well worth the cost of the stock and tools. Now I am going to save when I make my next 4 cabinets for the Atmos set up. Zunde go get a plunge router from a good company, I got a Dewalt. I fried a bit during my practices and I talked to them and they sent me out another for no charge. I was happy with their customer service. I picked up a jig from Jasper tools and watched quite a few videos on You Tube, then just go. I had aggravation no doubt but with every mistake I learned and I am sure you and anyone else can get the job done. There is an advantage to having all the same speakers in multichannel sound, the illusion is better preserved because ours brains and ears are so sensitive to differences we focus and lock onto differences. Different speakers and crossovers no matter how well you try to equalize either graphically or parametricly just never get close enough to be exactly the same from the lowest to the highest octaves. I begged Rich to build me a center and he told me he just didn't have the time. I wonder if he is prohibited to build ADS speakers because of some sort of legal agreement with Direct Electronics. I would love to hear the L1590/3s on his website. I am sure with the D'Appalito array and the extra drivers it is even more refined then the L1590/2s. I want to post a few links for you Zunde.
GO FOR IT!!!!!!!!

Parts express can get you the jig https://www.parts-express.com/jasper-circle-jig-model-240--365-265
I got the metal grill from Rich's blog http://www.reliablehardware.com/customspeakergrill-532diastaggered.aspx
This is the closest match I could find

Just wanted to add one last thing. Before the grandaughter arrived I tore my entertainment center apart and put my center channel under my display. I got the mids and tweeter perfectly in the same plane as the mains. Thats why you can see the cardboard boxes underneath to get the exact height. Once again just an experiment and temporary since the house is a disaster and not finalized. But the improvement in the sound was awesome. Had to share this because sitting in the dead center and closing your eyes, the center image is percievable when too high or too low. Once again the wife was livid and she did get over it after a few weeks LOL.

You better post some pics Zunde when you get to mini heaven and your ears are dripping wet with with that clear ADS center channel sound.

I need some time between my Surround build so I can regain my sanity. With my work schedule, I had to take a week off for vacation to get this done. I admit I'm a work'aholic ... That said, I'm sure there are some local craftsman that would be happy to do this for you. Richard had the one he has made for him, or someone built it for him as a gift? Craigslist, Local phone apps like 5mile are a good source for finding someone close to you that has the skills/tools to do it. In my opinion, it's well worth it.

Cheers,
Garry~
