My first Fisher

Last weekend I bought my first Fisher, heck, my first tube amp: an 800B in custom cabinet with Empire 208 stacked atop. The Fisher is now at the shop for recapping, new rectifiers, antenna bracket, and anything else that might need addressing.

Any information/advice from those-in-the-know here would be much appreciated.

It is likely an external (to the unit) speaker switch, often times even including a headphone jack. Would need to see the entire piece to be sure.

Of note: The flying impedance tap lead is connected to the wrong channel! The way the speaker switch is connected means that won't make any difference, but in any event, the front panel "Phase" switch will not operate with the speakers connected as shown.

I agree with Dave on the Box, and the flying lead. As the 800b only has one set of speaker output's, the box will add 2 more sets of speaker leads. Hopefully it's switchable.

The AM antenna mounts can be repaired by using a cable or wire bundle retainer. These can be found @ Home Depot in the electrical dept in various sizes. Your's is probably 1/2" or 5/8". Measure the diameter of the AM antenna. Then get a pkg of the retainers and mount the antenna to the arm. Here's a side view of what it looks like. Get it in clear.

That receiver is a VERY nice entry into the world of tubes.And an Empire table as well? Now you're just showing off:)

Nice find! That's a very clean 800B and TOTL Empire turntable too. They knew they had something special when they added that official looking US eagle plaque :beerchug:

Move the White lead on the upper row to the far right tap, then bring the impedance lead up to the upper row to the 8ohm tap.

With that "Thunder Chicken" on the front of the console, it almost looks like a Budweiser employee owned it at one time.
 
You could always get a couple of old bottle openers and mount them in place of the "chicken". :beerchug:
 
I just got the Fisher back from the shop and it's in tip-top form now. I'd like to get a second set of speakers running on it, though. Can anyone suggest a good switch box?

Yes, I have used a Niles DPS-1 in situations like this with much success. It's an A/B switching box that can be used either with one amp and two sets of speakers OR with one set of speakers and switching between two amps. I've used it both ways. It's important to note that most tube amps should see a speaker load at their output transformers while powered up, so switching speakers while your amp is on may not be the best idea. I'd shut down while switching speaker loads. I'm not trying to solicit business and I hope I'm not breaking any forum rules, but I do have an extra Niles A/B box. If you're interested in it, shoot me a PM. Again, not my goal to solicit business, just trying to help.

Sorry, I just saw your question. (I've been off the AK grid for a bit.) I did get it fixed in KC. Place called The Electronic Center in Overland Park. Knowledgeable, nice people there.
