My first Shortwave

cruisaire

PGA and Rainwater!
I always wanted a decent SW receiver, but many better ones are just too damn high. This one is like new and at only $35....I just couldn't leave it at the thrifty!!

$35. !!!!! WOW! Man that is a find, Im into radio here from ham radio to shortwave listening, I had a Satellit 500 and also was a great receiver, yours has real nice audio as well and its considered a very good receiver overall. Nice find and good luck, enjoy it.

I put a double slinky antenna in the attic. Really nice reception now. This thing is way too big to be called "a portable"!

That looks very cool...I know nothing of that kind of radio but I think I'd like to know more...nice!

Hell of a deal. You should put up a small ground plane antenna for VHF/UHF too, you can listen to a lot more than just SW with that one :)

very nice radio indeed:thmbsp:back when grundig made top qaulity stuff .it definately is not like the junk they sell under the name now.:)

$35, huh ? Uhh, wanna double yer money ?!? Those were pretty highly regarded sets...An' they went for megabux new...

Listened to "Saturday Night Country Music" from Australia at 8 this morning here in Georgia, mighty fine sound from down there! With AM and FM on this as well, I can't figure why anyone would toss it out? It sounds and tunes just fine. :)

Well, some people are just plain STUPID...Or maybe trying to work it was simply too much for their 2-volt brains...Or it ended up on the bad side of a nasty divorce/breakup...Or it was Papaw's set, & after he kicked the bucket, none of the rest of the Kallikacks wanted it...Who knows ? You about got the Steal of the Century, though...

Although I never found one this nice, I have bought many good SW sets at yard sales, cheap. They often still have the box, accessories, & manuals with them. It seems to be 50/50 if I will find the battery tray filled with a leaking mess. I think they get originally bought as gifts. The intended recipient (who would have never bought it to begin with) plays with it for awhile and then, quitely it gets put away. Eventually, it creeps out during the yard sale or Salvation Army cull, & you know the rest.

Great find OP, really great find.

The 800 is a nice radio. It was a collaboration between Grundig and Drake. Drake will repair and maintain it and does some modes to correct a few of the compromises made when Grundig put it into production. I wanted one when they were in production and still kick myself for not getting one. There is the original and a 2nd version. The 2nd version corrected some of the issues found in the original. I do not know the s/n range but the 2nd version came with the headphones while the 1st did not.

You got yourself a really nice unit on the cheap. While battery operated as well as AC, I consider the battery option as backup for when there are power outages rather than thinking of the radio as a portable. Well, maybe portable if your name is Bruce Banner.

thanks for the reminder as i forgot all about the drake/grundig connection.at the time they came out i wanted one really bad as i knew that drake made great gear as well as grundig.needles to say i came into a drake r8 and bought it instead of the sat800.

Batteries for power outtages, agreed. The "boom box" styling is deceiving and shear weight (with or without 6 D-cells) make it too big to haul around. I did a search on the serial numbers for 1st or 2nd gen and came up with nada.
