My First Sony ES: Sony TA-N330ES

Believe it or not, but my favorite sony purchase are these Babies.

Sony SS-HA1 Speakers are for real. Unbelievable Clarity and tight Bass.

I have a pair of SS MB150Hs that I use for front mains for my HT that are simply incredible. I used them at first because they fit in the bottom of my stand but now I just love them.

I have three pairs. I buy whenever I see them for under $10/pair. That's real Kevlar for the woofers. The long throw woofers run full range. There is just a cap for the phenolic tweeter. I've run them stupid loud and they can take it.

Stupid is a great word for them. Stupid quality for the price. Stupid good sound for the size. Stupid people dont realize how good they are and sell them cheap!

Believe it or not, the woofer basket is made out of plastic. Plastic does not reflect sound waves like metal. I've often wondered if this benefit is real and part of what makes the 150 so good.

I'll definitely be on the look out for these at $10. Kevlar makes for nice a tight bass response. There is a long break in period, but once they are broken in they have great punch.

Anything under $30 or so is a good buy really. The spls they are capable of are rather amazing.

The ONLY thing I dont like is the usual black vinyl wrap on the cabinets. The look like hell but sound heavenly.

Nice! I recently obtained my first ES in the form of a V333ES receiver. I'm still very impressed with it... especially for the $30 I paid. I also kinda like the sound of that old ES, too! At 35 lbs, this sucker is a lot heavier than the Luxman R-115 it replaced or the Yamaha HTR-5990 I moved the other day (and am still feeling it in my back!) I just missed out on a STR-DA777ES for not a lot more than that and am still annoyed.

Don't bother with any of the other ones! The best one is by far the STR-DA777ES. There is no comparison in my opinion. I have had many of the ES multichannel receivers. My favorites are the 777es, 5es, and for the price, the DB930.

The V series were built on the same platform as the 777. I've had both. The sound is not far apart at all. You would be hard pressed to tell the difference. I actually prefer my V555ES over the 777 due to functions and 2 way remote. I'm sure there are other Sony's that sound great also. I don't think you will find a DA777ES for Cheap, the word is out. But you may be able to still score the V series at a bargain price.

I wanted to hear the ES with some other speakers before I bring the Imperials back out so I hauled out the KLH 6s. Fresh from a recap and woofer rebuild and refoam, they soak up the 110 wpc and spit tons of bass back out. Compared to the Optimus 5s I just took out, the KLHs have deep bass but do lack the mids that the Realistics do. They both sound great, just very different.

So far using the Marantz 1060 as the pre amp is just fantastic. Super smooth is the best way I can describe the combo.......

In my opinion there is no comparison. It depends on how much power you need. The DA777ES is 200 + 200 wpc in 2 channel stereo. The build quality is very nice. The only thing about these is that the ICs get very hot and you need to resolder the joints often. The rumor is that they discontinued the 777es because it was cutting into their sales of separates at the time (E9000es/N9000es).

Regardless, yes, there are many great Sonys out there. Kenwood and Sony are underrated. My Sony STR-GX10ES is a beast and also has the best headphone output I have heard.

Well yeah, I know the 777 is better, but good luck finding one for a reasonable price or even at all. My almost immaculate V333 cost $30 and sounds very nice and has a lot of useful features.

I think the 777 must not have been made in large numbers. I've seen very few for sale... other than the one locally I missed out on!

I've heard that 200 wpc thing a few times, but I haven't seen it documented. I looked for it several times in the 777 users manual and never saw mention of it. Does the 777 test at 200 wpc, or where does this number come from?

The 777ES was not made for very long that's why there aren't as many out there. I got mine for $80 like 5 or so years ago. I have started seeing them pop up for under $200 pretty regularly though. I would say with patience you could find one for under $150.

You might be right about the 200 wpc as I just went through the manual and couldn't find it either. I did remember seeing it somewhere though. I am mostly basing this off the comparison between the DA5ES and the DA777ES and in terms of power to me there is a huge difference. The first time I hooked up my DA777ES to my DCM Time Windows it made them produce sound they were never capable of before, it was almost as if they came alive with power and you could feel them move and swing with the music.

For people looking for older multichannel ES receivers they go for next to nothing on the shopgoodwill auction site because most of the time they are just listed as "sony receiver" or something generic. I got my DA5ES for $50 this way.

The DA777ES will put out 200 watts per channel in Bridge mode only at 8 Ohms for 2 channel listening. You would not be able to run a 6 or 4 Ohm load.
