My new speaker build

I would have to agree with Gary.

I'd want to glue them up myself rather than the screw idea; although I've considered the same removable baffle idea myself and if we'd planned for it I'd be pro-baffle swap.

I was a bad boy today :nono: I'm down in the cities with my dad and I made a trip to the mapplewood Rockler store. Let's just say there was a 30% off sale...

So the still untitled speakers will be getting veneered for sure now, after staring at the wall of wood for an hour or so I managed to walk away with just some birch and walnut. I plan to do some sort of stripe deal on the fronts and then plain old birch on the sides.

I've just finished up about an hour of listening to the set. All of what follows is just preliminary, of course and some changes will be made.

First of all, this is a high-energy speaker. Very fast and punchy bass. Although it will not give my IMF's anything to worry about in the extension department, the USP's (Untitled Speaker Project) do possess impact that I sometimes wish they had.

The midrange is very detailed, and along with the highs, there is exceptional imaging capability. Both the highs and mids are more forward than I am used to, but I found I acclimated to it, and when I reconnected the IMF's I conversely found the midrange to be slightly recessed. Still, I think I may rework the crossover a little to pad down the tweeter a bit (or install an L-Pad).

The drivers integrated much more smoothly than I had anticipated given the haphazard driver selection and arrangement.

I think, Bob, you may be pretty well pleased when you make it back up tomorrow.

Done!!!

Well, they're done. We listened to them tonight, and while their budget driver heritage is apparent, they could have been worse. Imaging is very good, and they possess excellent dynamic range. Placed as they were for most of the listening, they did not get much help from boundary reinforcement as they normally would, limiting their bass extension, but they made the effort. They did pass the punishing Ninth Symphony test, in my book.

They seem to be well suited for HT use, with their clear vocal range.

Anyways, pictures are worth a thousand words and so on. Also, we did name them. Officially, they are the Compact, being the smallest speaker we've built so far.

AWESOME work! Beautiful speakers! Your quite the Craftsman! Make me want to go out and build something.

Thanks,
John.:music::D

It's cool that you left the back unfinished to show off your craftsmanship. Can't wait to here how they sound this weekend. They look beautiful!

Gorgeous work guy`s! I love the Dark insert that is cool. Glad to hear they turned out nice and you really like them.

Actually... We left the back unfinished to show off our inability to measure for veneer properly. :o Err... no! You're right! Craftsmanship and all that! :thmbsp:

And some lucky schmuck will actually get to take them home with him, whether he wants them or not.

If I had cut perfectly I would have had enough for one of the backs, but never both.

I think I still want to watch Gary venner sometime just to see how competent veneering is done... the pretty wood covers for the sloppy edges/joints quite well though. Considering we got a little rushed at the end (to finish for this weekend) I think I'm happy with how they came out. Considering their size and drives I think they sound better than they should, so props to Mike for his figuring.

It's a little known fact, independently verified by Zilch, that a racing stripe on a speaker makes it go faster.

The veneer looks nice. I like the dark stripe, too. Veneering is something I might want to try in the future.

Nice job! I am always impressed by a nice veneer job. I am still mastering the paint brush and spray can.
