My Pioneer PL-61 does the strangest thing!!!

Hey fellow AK’ers

So I recently acquired a PL-61 and finally got it up and running today but it does something so strange and I just can’t figure out how or why!

The stroboscope light didn’t turn on once during power up and i didn’t know whether or not it was spinning at the correct rpm so I took my cell phone flashlight and shined it where the light would usually hit the platter dots to indicate speed and voila! it turned on! I thought it was just coincidence but it did it again and again I shone the light from my phone on it and it turned on! Whaaaa!??!!

What’s going on here guys? Never seen anything like this and can’t wrap my head around what’s going on... any theories or guesses are welcome.

The strobe lamp bulb is a neon type bulb. They work by ionizing neon gas between two electrodes and creating an orange glow. When they get old and tired they sometimes can't ionize the neon but shining a flashlight on it provides enough extra energy to complete the ionization and they come on. Photons at work.

That’s fascinating. I was thinking along the lines of some type of charge or “jump” being given off by my flashlight but I couldn’t wrap my head around it. Thanks @gridleakrick
