My Sony STR-7045 is Back

My trusty Sony STR-7045 is back in service. My Fosi BT20A is sitting in the closet. I'm listening KPFA's Sunday Show podcast.

Being vintage, it has some issues. But, I'm going to double clean the far-left input selector switch with DeOxit. I think that'll solve the crosstalk I'm hearing when I set the input to Aux 1 or Phono when my phone is playing something.

The 1/4th jack you see in the picture is hooked up to my phone. It's a nice long 6" cable.

The speakers are JBL LXE-330s I picked them up at a Goodwill for $9.

I have two BTA20 Pro units, with 48V power supplies.

They sound good. Why is yours in the closet?

BTW, you mentioned a photo. I don't see one.

Huh, I thought my phone attached the pics to the post, Here they are.





I find the BT20A doesn't pair well with the vintage JBLs. The mids are kind of stick out too much for my ears. and there's a lack of low-end. On OTOH, being driven by the STR-7045, they have this nice rich low-end.

Having said all that, my Kef F15s and BT20A pair great together. That combo has a nice neutral low-end. It could just be my personal taste. It probably is. I have sensitive hearing (hyperacusis) so any peaks in a combination of gear stick out and/or actually hurt my ears. So I like switching out pieces to find something my ears can live with. Plus, I wanted the ability to listen to a tuner at night and in the morning. I like catching news/public affairs stuff in the morning. And my area has a good bunch of non-commercial stations music-wise. And to be honest I like listening to the commercial ones when I'm in the mood. Live 105 came back to the bay, and that brings me back to my high school years.

Oh and btw, my cat's name is Lisa. She loves her cat tree.

I have an STR-7045 as well, the input crosstalk is pretty much unavoidable. However, if you use the Tape input you won't have bleed across to your other sources (phono/tuner).

I do have a strange question - Is the switch in or out when you turn on loudness? Mine seems to work backwards from what I would expect (when it's depressed, it's off).

The loudness switch is backwards on mine as well. I guess Sony just designed it that way. It's honestly not my favorite receiver for hearing reasons. The clunk when you move the switches is super loud. Otoh, the sound is quite warm when you engage the loudness control. I usually leave mine off, since I'm in a super small bedroom.
