My VPI RCM came in yesterday and...

What a huge difference. I have a original ATco pressing of Derek & The Dominos - Layla and before I cleaned a bunch of times with the spin clean and it still didnt sound good with a lot of pops and clicks and now it sounds really good and really quiet. all the records I have played so far sound really really good.

Not sure what your useing for cleaning fluids/rinse but it can only get better from here, quite a few have added a second wand for the rinse stage. I'm not knocking DIY fluids but with the excellent results that are CD quiet I'm sticking with the AIVS cleaning fluids and pure water rinse.

I am just using the VPI fluid right now but open to reccomendations :)

Finally I get to listen to the records I have cleaned! just installed my new Grado cart and man does it sound good and my feshly clean records sound phenominal.

Congrats, I really didn't think that the improvement would be as audible as it is. I thought that I was doing good with hand washing in the sink...the vacuum part is just the ticket!

What 'til you cartridge gets some(40+) hours on it. Preston

I can't wait till it has that many hours to see what it sounds like. I am surprised on how good it sounds before its even broke in.

You will be amazed..I built my own (but incorporated VPI's wand) and my albums are silent..no pops, no crackles, nothing. Only think that can make a sound is a physical mark (scratch) and I don;t really keep those..

I also went to the vinyl liners...to many times I had clean LP's put them in the paper sleave and it came out needing full cleaning again..way to much paper dust and crap.

Link to plans? :D

OP - I'm another AIVS user. Good stuff.

I like the enzyme fluids for first step. Several companies offer them, I use Phoenix. Takes a little longer as it needs to soak for a couple of minutes but the results are great. Second step is MoFi Superwash followed by a rinse with clean or distilled water.

I look forward to trying the AIVS in the future since so many folks praise them.

Enjoy the VPI :thmbsp:

I went through the journey myself. First had washing then Nitty Gritty and I was happy.
The VPI 16 changed my life. Records were awesome. Then I was able to trade some gear fro a nice VPI HW 17 and now records sound even better. Not sure if it is really woirth spending much more on the 17 when new, but used/trade I would suggest giving it strong consideration.

However as several folks mentioned the use of great fluids and patience - leave them on as recommended - for a few minutes makes all the difference.
Soiled/molded records - it is a MUST to use enzyme or some sort of really strong cleaner first.

I do use home brew as well as MOFI and AIVS fluids.
Enjoy!!

anyone add Gruv glide after? I have done before and after tests and the gruv glide makes a very noticble difference. also I just ordered the AIVS ultimate cleaning kit :)

Same story. I have a Spin Clean, then I switched to hand washing. I have all the stuff pulled together to build an RCM but it just wasn't getting done so I sold some extraneous equipment and bought an Okki Nokki which I will from now forward refer to as an Okki Doki. Just got it yesterday so I'm working with their concentrate.

What I really like is the ease of use. I go frustrated pulling out albums that I wanted to hear and finding that I hadn't washed them. So that meant I either had to haul out the washing stuff and go to the sink with it - and wait a half hour for dry time - or put it aside to wash in a batch and listen to something else. With the Okki Doki I can pull it wash it play it - and I get very good results. Not saying a DIY RCM wouldn't do just as well. I'm sure it would if the vacuum pickup was good.

So now I'm casting about for fluid alternatives and finding this thread very helpful :-)

its pretty awesome. unfortunately I cant listen to the cleaned records yet. I bent my cantilever on xmas eve and then ordered a new cartridge and they sent me a pmount so I had to send it back to exchange it for a standard. so I gotta wait another week or week and 1/2 before my new cartridge comes in. I am done cleaning about half of my collection already I was cleaning a ton yesterday and will do some today. as much as I want to listen to see how well they sound vs just using my spin clean before and gruv glide I'll have to wait but at least my collection will be all clean and ready when my new cartridge arrives :D very cool machine and very straight forward and easy to use. when draining the tank you can see all kinds of crap the spin clean didnt get so I can already tell they will sound better. the new machines like I got come with standard switches instead of the metal toggle switches but I kinda wish i had the metal toggle switches just because I like that style especially on my old tube amps. anyhow I cant wait to listen to my records again after being better cleaned. and as always I add my gruv glide treatment after every clean

Two words: BACKUP CARTRIDGE

Bought my VPI 16.5 a month ago, had a spin clean and a 20 year old 1.5FI Nitty Gritty, really like the VPI better, more versatile than the NG IMHO. Been using the AVIS 3 step package with excellent results.I still use the SC for filty records first, then the VPI.
