Mystery Speakers ?

Actually, the OP may have been a bit quick jumping to the conclusion that they were Tannoy. The only details I went on at the time was the woofer details but it seems a number of speakers from around that time used the same or very similar woofers - compliments of API - and that includes Tannoys as posted by GordonW here.

It also didn't help that they looked remarkably like the Tannoy C-8 and C-88.

But after I got home earlier I opened them up again and took some snaps of the tweeter, woofer and crossover (attached) ... so anyone who mentioned API/Energy and specifically Mirage was well on the right track! There's still no specific ID details on or in the speakers, but the crossover ID gave a good hit via Google.

The speakers are Mirage M760 from the Mirage 60 series manufactured from around 1989 to 1992:

That's interesting. I haven't looked too much at the Mirage series beyond the 1st couple interations (as in the SM-1's I had and the 450's I have now). I didn't notice that your woofer had a stitched rubber surround. The Energy Pro 22's had stitched surrounds on poly woofers.

Saw one reference in an ebay ad to the Mirage M-760 having a MSRP of $1000 in 88-92. Below are some pics from this listing.

API built woofers (or had built for them - like the Peerless in my old SM-1's) for a wide variety of makes under their roof and for which they were OEM's for. For example, in an email discussion I had with a fellow that worked with API predecessor, Global Sound, then Merak Acoustics and then back to API, we were discussing early Merak Acoustic speakers (pre-1983, before they went into receivershp ... and then acquired by Axiom) and he indicated that API made 8" and 10" woofers for Merak.

Anyone run into these before and can offer any confirmation of Cambridge Speakers and the "PL" designation found on so many API-based speakers?

Note I just recently got a pair of Paisley Research Model .5's, and their speakers are marked with the "PL". Both the woofers and tweetes are marked "PL" but the sticker on the tweeters is just covering a Vifa sticker - I'll check and report on the full model number in the linked thread:

These speakers look like db Plus speakers, very similar to db Plus 1010 that I have refurbished, with the silver gray front and a similar driver configuration.

dB Plus is another API product, so I don't doubt it. Apparently dB Plus started as a house brand for an outlet in Toronto - Majestic .... then spread to other retailers.

There's 2 ports at the rear and a single set of binding posts.

But I'm not home for a few more days and don't have my camera with me.

When I looked inside, they're well lined with a thick cotton type of heavy padding plus have some loose pink batts. Crossovers weren't elaborate (visually at least) as I thought they might have been, but the internal wiring is much heavier than I've seen with other speakers.

The previous owner had them since new, I would say early 90's? which would roughly tie in with the Kenwood components from above.
