NAD 316BEE distortion in one channel

I've got some trouble with my NAD 316BEE (v1) that I've had trouble diagnosing by searching on these forums/the internet in general. I've had the amp about ten years and find it perfect for my needs; after ten years I wouldn't be that sorry to have to replace it, but I'd really rather repair it because whatever I replace it with is likely to be only a lateral shift.

In the right channel, the sound goes from loud and distorted to muted (as if I'm listening underwater) every couple of seconds. This happens whether I use speakers or headphones, and on every input, meaning it's neither the source nor the output that's the problem.

I've got a bit of experience fixing audio gear (more often turntables than amps), but I can't even figure out how to effectively search for this problem, let alone how to fix it. Any links to repair guides or threads about similar issues would be most appreciated.

Does moving any of the controls have an effect on the sound? Many time dirty connections will get the signal to drop out, etc.

Go through all switches and controls while it's acting up to see if any will affect the sound.

Twiddling all the tone control knobs while playing seems to have done the trick. That sure was easier than I was expecting, thanks very much!
