NAD 7240PE Low Sound At Full Volume

I'll take a closer look over the weekend at the solder joints. Is there an easy way to rule out the preamp transformer and output transistors?
 
Yes ... test them. Might look into relay.. see you on the week end. give time for your thoughts.

The volume control is in the preamp section. It has no effect if you're plugged directly into "Main In."

That's correct - your phone is now acting as the pre-amp, along with the volume control. If you turn up the volume on the phone, does the sound from the speakers get to normal listening levels?

Sorry for the wait, probably won't have a chance to take a closer look til later this month. I thought I would have time this weekend, but I didn't, I'll post once I do.
 
I have this exact same amp I picked up today at local thrift shop for... $4. With the exact same problem. EXTREME low volume with either FM tuner, Schiit DAC/phone plugged into the line level inputs (tried CD and Video), however with the DAC/phone plugged into into the main amp it sounds normal with the phone controlling the volume. Sounds very good too, except for fairly low noise/buzzing when there is nothing playing. Have not tried speakers yet. I will look into the last suggestion above to unscrew the tuner board and look underneath at the pre-amp components (namely power supply).
 
Ok, I just let it play music on headphones for about 45 minutes on the power amp input, and I worked the buttons and pots back and forth for about ten minutes, then plugged everything back in normally and... it works. All seems ok now and sounds damn sweet on my Sennheiser HD650's. Next stop... plugging in some speakers, but I think I will just take it to the garage tonight as is and do some listening over headphones for a couple of hours and let the thing break back in. Who knows how long it sat around unused.
