Naim??

sideways2

Where the heck is S'toon?
Greetings!!

Anybody lend some insight??

I've never heard a Naim...not sure what to expect...

Is it smooth and big sounding like a Class A amp??

Transperant?? Warm like a Mac??

What speakers does it tend to like??

Noticed a Nait 5 for $750.00 up here...

Just curious :)

I'm afraid to listen to Naim......I might like it.:D
Great reputation among high end aficionados and music lovers. Someday I'll go have a listen.
Description from owners as ultra-musical!

Naim has a very unique sound…like most “proper” British integrated’s the imaging is always very precise but where the Naim stands out is it outstanding rhythm, pace and speed of attack. It’s one of those components that will get your toes tapping and involved with the music. Definitely more musical then it is analytical. For a relatively compact (but hefty for the size) chassis it can put out a lot of sound. Its easy to understand how one can become addicted to them as there is lot’s to like. I owned one and quite enjoyed the time I spent with it. It’s much like well geared British sportscar…it’s not a powerhouse though and works best on speakers that are more easily driven

i have only heard of the brand and done a bit of research. they seem to be well liked among us "audiophiles". i like the way they look as well

Naim is Naim, it's quite unique in several ways, both sonically and in philosophy... it's not like Quad, neither is it warm.

(To me) the Nait 5 is the worst integrated amp they had. (sometimes described as 'The Naim amp for people who don't really like Naim')
The Nait 5i(-2) is a different story though.

If you're looking for a big, warm, smooth sound I'm afraid Naim won't suit your needs.
If you like a fast, lively and exciting sound, with plenty of PRaT, that'll get your feet tapping, then look no further.

Ok...so it's not cold and analytical...but its not warm either...

Grainy?? Glare??

Forward presentation I like...musicality I like...PRaT I like...transparency I like...

Basically a Class A sound but not running Class A :D

naim gear has good drive and grove....good current. They sorta remind me of some of the Krell amps in that regard. Some say Naim amps are harsh and lack romance. But I find Naim just like every thing else on the market.....Its gear like all other gear...they share somethings with other brands while being different. Its your choice in what you like....only your ears can make that choice. I've known Naim to be transparent.

It that's what you really like, than I can really recomment another British amp, namelijke the Sonneteer Campion.:) (although they rarely come up on the s/h market)

In my experience the Nait 5i is more analytical than warm. Some might find it a little too forward sounding. It's detailed and transparent though.
The older Nait 5 is smoother/softer sounding.

Oh ya...I know...not looking to buy...just curious...

I have a buddy who's big into Class A sounding amps...and although I don't mind that signature as well, I find the size of some to be huge!! Way bigger than I would like LOL!!

Was wondering what little British amps would possess that similiar sound...

I guess there are a few Class A integrated still being made...Sugden comes to mind...

don't know how much money you want to spend but Musical Fidelity which is British has the AMS35i and is class A dual mono power stages....at 35 watts...but it's no small amp. They do have some small class A amps that have been discontinued and can be found on the used market.

Actually not looking for a purchase...just some ammo to fight back this Class A thingie with my buddy :D

The Mac, at the moment is doing just fine...

None of the smaller Naim gear has sounded like a good Class-A amp to me. I haven't liked any of it, cost considered. I do like their separates but have yet to hear a Naim integrated that I thought was worth the price.

...just my opinion....

LOL!!!

I will one day have to try one though...been through a few British amps and have enjoyed a few too :)
