Nakamichi lx-3 vs onkyo

Hello I’m new to this site and was looking for some advice. Im interested in purchasing a Nakamichi lx-3 or an onkyo haven’t decided yet. A good friend of mine told me to get a deck pre 1996 since the newer ones play the tape too quickly thus altering the sound. Any advice and input would be greatly appreciated thanks

In top condition a Nakamichi LX-3 will outperform any Onkyo machine (and I like them and own one). Don't be surprised if it needs repair to get operating properly since they're older machines.

Thanks for input i heard a clip from a nak before and the audio was excellent

I can only comment on Nak decks, as i have most of them. The lx3 is a sankyo transport deck which is very good. If the deck has been sitting for years not used it will most likely have dead spots in the reel motor or cam motor and or the idler tire will be dried up or cracked or worn out. When you get the deck, test it with a cassette in it. Check ff and rewind. Should be fairly fast rewinding or ff a 90 min tape in about 90 seconds. give or take. Also, with a tape, let tape play for the whole tape. Should obviously play a whole tape. What i do to test for dead spots in reel motor is.If there is an auto repeat switch on the lx3, most naks have auto repeat.I switch it on, throw a tape in and let it play for hours,it will rewind automatically and replay the tape forever. Come back and if the tape has stopped anytime then either the tire is toast or reel motor has dead spots.
LX3 is a good deck and fairly easy to work on. Tire is easy, reel motor not so much.

Thanks for the insight its really appreciated

The LX-3 is NOT an easy deck to service. Replacing the idler in one of these is a small nightmare. I encourage you to get it serviced by a good Nak guy, or just buy one already done.

I've replaced the idler tire in Sankyo transports, but not one in an LX-3. What makes them more difficult than other Naks with Sankyo transports?

This one doesn't have a plate in front of it, that you can remove to see the idler. You have to take out the transport. I don't know if all Sankyo transports are like this. My BX-300 was fairly easy.

Hmmm. I did not know this but transport removal is easier than doing any idler tire imo. What is it,4 screws and 6 wiring cables and its out. No? I always remove the transport when im doing any maintenance and honestly have never done an lx3, but have done multiple bx300s,cr3,4,5,7. Transport removal is straight forward. For the first time though its kind of scary i guess.

I picked up an onkyo TA-RW244 does anyone know the original manufacturer year it was released? Or any info on the deck? Thanks in advance
