Near mint 500-C

This popped up in Bartertown and looks to be in better condition than my current 500-C, so I figured I'd add it to the museum. Included is the original box and paperwork, knob brites also, although they need reattached. Once it arrives I will do an assessment before replacing the cans and giving it a proper restoration. Looks like all original tubes, and one 12ax7 lost it's vacuum, turning cloudy. It's been awhile since I restored a Fisher, hope i remember how. :p

Nice, Steve! Hey, restoring one is like falling off a bicycle--you never forget how! Keep us posted....

So this very nice 500-C arrived today, hooked it up to my variac and DBT bringing it slowly up to a little over 100V with no sign of a short or smoke. I could not get it to pass any sound though. Tested the output tubes and they all test very close and around 3/4 of what new tubes should test. I also replaced the one smoked phase invertor tube. I will give it more voltage and see if it passes sound later when time permits, sometimes the DBT doesn't give off enough voltage to get it passing sound, trying to be gentle with this gem and not cause any issues. I have yet to test the small tubes yet, but they seem to all be lighting up.

Taking the DBT out of circuit brought the unit to produce sound, currently sounding very good. So it seems this receiver had one bad 12ax7, everything else seems to be in good working order. Stereo beacon is actually working also.
I will scrape the old epoxy off the knobs and remount all the brass ends so she looks presentable, along with a good cleaning since it does have very light dust keeping the chassis from gleaming.. Very pleased!

Just noticed something a bit odd here. The brass knob caps all are plain with no black line on them, and these are all original having only one on the tuner knob left in place. I'm wondering if early versions did not have the lines on the caps, pretty sure this is the first i have come across like this.

Look at the knobs themselves. Should be a tab on the side lined up with the "D" shaft. Line on the knobs probably put on due to us old folks with out of date glasses!:rflmao:

I realize that Larry, but most of all my fisher's from this era have black notches on the brass caps, this one obviously doesn't, curious to why.

The knob Bright's are most likely modern reproductions that were purchased by the previous owner but never installed, and so just sent along with the set when you purchased it. The originals are no doubt long gone........

Uh oh, I feel a quest coming on.

They have bits of original epoxy on the back of them Dave so they are not reproduction. Maybe Avery ran out of the others and used some meant for just tuners. Very odd none the less, and I'm pretty good at spotting aftermarket ones.
