I was looking at the Ortofon 2m that is already pre mounted.
Well, those are excellent suggestions. I have a 1200 MK2 (never DJ'ed, thankfully). Over the years, I have used Audio Technica, Shure (no longer in production), Ortofon, Grado, and Sumiko carts. (Just saying that almost ANY nice cartridge will work great with a Technics turntable). IMHO, Grado's Prestige Series blend particularly well with Technics tables. With AT, Ortofon, and Grado, an advantage is that you can often "swap up" to the next level stylus later when you wear out the original needle. All of these brands are excellent, and all have dedicated followers. Some owners of Belt drive TT's think that the Grado's Prestige Series has a bit of bass bloat. I don't hear that at all with the Technics Direct Drive tables. You would have to mount the cartridge, but since you have a NOS Technics, it will include a VERY easy to use alignment gauge that just slips over the headshell shaft. The Technics OM explains everything, and really well. It might be a good idea to purchase a digital Stylus Force gauge. The tonearm weight dials are not always accurate. A digital gauge didn't exist when your turntable was originally designed, and would have been a fantastic thing to have...whichever cartridge you decide on. I picked one up online for (I can't remember exactly) around $20, and I'm not sure how I lived without it ; ) Have Fun!

But mechanical gauges. I use a Correx 0.5 to 5 p for about 50 years now.
Trent makes a really good point. Grease can literally harden and make moving parts "stick". It should be easy to see with disassembly, and simply requires cleaning and re-greasing. Modern lubricants generally last much longer than the stuff used in 1976. Also,the platter sits on a bearing, and the bearing needs a couple of drops of oil every couple of years (very easy to do, and well detailed on YouTube with videos on the SL-1200 / same drive system). Cleaning the bearing on an older TT before lubing it is a really good idea, as well.

The Ortofon Concorde Music Bronze and the 2M Bronze are both easy to recommend. The 2M is easy enough to set up, the Concorde is plug-and-play. The 2M is a bit more reserved, the CM is a bit more lively. The 2M requires about 50 hours of bed-in time for the suspension, the Concorde about 40. Both sound better than just good. I have both for my pre-Mk2 SL-1800, the primary source in my headphone rig, currently wearing the CM Bronze.
