What's wrong with the one in it??

Which function? There are 4 different boards with function switches on them.

donor unit's are the only way to get one. If you have the manual, on page # 30 & 31 is the exploded view. Use that and get hold of Danny @ y'day's audio (see sponsor list below.) he may have the board.

Save the old one. mark the fixer might be able to use it.

Is this the REC. Selector Switch?? This is the only function Rotary Switch on the 838. Everything else is a pushbutton or flip switch.

Again. Danny @ yesterday's audio would be your best bet. Unless someone has that switch laying around in a donor unit.

Not really unless you have multiple sources(tape decks) plugged into your receiver and want to record from one to the other using the internal tape loop. Also recording from Phono and FM. Instead of a Tape Monitor switch they opted to go this way on the 838. Another option is to get an external tape control switch (radio sahck made them years ago), and plug all your tape decks in that. Then you can record from one to the other outside ofthe receiver.

But it's always better if it was fixed. And if the wife has this thing about missing knobs, etc., you'll stand a better chance of keeping it in the main system.

Sorry I got confused with the TAPE Monitor Switches. the RECORD SELECTOR lets you listen to one source while recording from another. Say you want to record an LP and you're listening to FM at the time. Set the switch to Phono, and record the LP to Tape, and while that's being done, you can listen to FM or another source.

Still, all in all, something I'd want to have on my rig. And not just for aesthetics.

Was looking at the pictures of the 838 was wondering if the stem for the volume, bass, balance, etc., does the function pot have the same stem or is the knob different, not in looks but different in the rear of the knob?

The Function switch is a switch, not a pot. A pot is a potentiometer, like the balance, Bass, Treble, and Volume controls. Record Selector Switch is a 3 or 4 postion Rotary switch. BIG Difference.

The outer end of the shaft is similar with the same grooves in it for the knobs. Knobs are the same.

Yes Larry it is the recording selector switch stem that is broke, I'm used to my brother calling everything with a knob a pot, like he does with the function selector of the SX 636, thanks for your input. Watthour thanks for the alternative.

I have a system to repair broken stems. As long as the rest is ok I can fix the broken stem as solid as new. Send me a PM and I will shoot you some pics.
