How much volume an amplifier can produce with a speaker is not directly related to the position of the markings on a volume control - manufacturers know that if the thing is pretty loud with only a bit of a turn, the customer will assume vast power capacity, when, in fact, the rather reaches of the volume knob don't do much.
That said, 10 watts per channel isn't a whole lot of power. On one hand, it is plenty with most speakers if you simply want reasonable volume, but if you want head banging or you have a large room, you will need either very efficient speakers or a very powerful amp.
But if you find a good powered subwoofer, suddenly the equation changes - it is bass that requires lots of power, so you have a lot more options. But skip the home theater subwoofers if you want more than thumpa thumpa. I used to come across a lot of subwoofers for very little money - often the plate amps were fried and many were just home theater boom boxes - but some of them were very good. A good subwoofer is the cheapest way to get a sense of the room the music was recorded in - the air vibrating, which is excitingly realistic, and cost prohibitive if you try to get it with just a pair of speakers.
