Need a speaker Dr!

Hi All
I have refoamed a pair of Advent Legacy 3s making sure of all the potential hazards (centering the VC etc) were accounted for. The result appeared great with no rubbing etc UNTIL i hooked them up the amp and now they both sound flat. If flat isn't the right description another would be it sounds like they are playing underwater!!
Given it was both speakers sounding flat I hooked up a second set incase it was the amp and they sound fine so it is clearly something that occurred during the reform. Given the are both flat the common thread is the actual surrounds which is the only thing that links the two.
Without starting a war of opinions here is it likely that the new surrounds need (dare i say it) running in to bring back their performance?
Could it be that the surrounds are two thick and therefore not as responsive or flexible enough for the requirements of the Advents?
Im at a loss here and any help is greatly appreciated.

You say they sound "flat" - Is it possible the tweeter wires became disconnected while you were in there?
 
New surrounds will need a period of break in before they sound their best. That is provided they are the correct surround to begin with.

Also make sure the driver are sealed to the cabinet. Small air leaks can have a significant impact on performance. I use "More Tite" rope caulk that is available at most hardware and home improvement stores.

The surrounds were purchased from SimplySpeakers so I assume they are the right ones. Ill check for how tight the drivers are located in the cabinets.
 
Place them face to face, wire one speaker out of phase with the other (reverse the +&-) than walk away, and let them play at a moderate volume for a while.
Maybe they just need a little shaking up to loosen the surrounds.
 
Then I have to agree with the others, if they are connected correctly, if they are mounted correctly, if there's no loose or out of place wiring inside the box, and if the foam was done right, then you are probably hearing them "right" for the first time in a long Time.
 
I just refoamed a pair of Legacy IIs with a foam kit from Rick Cobb (Looneytune2001 on eBay) and they sounded great right away.
 
I have also done a set of II's from RC and no issues. I just finished a set of I's and will fire them up tomorrow. However, once I do that I run them in at low volume for a few days with a FM station and then off we go!!
 
If the new surrounds as mounted have somehow repositioned the neutral resting position of the woofer cone inward or outward from its former position, that would cause non-linearity in the woofer's response on both drivers.

Barring that I'd say run a break in period on the new surroundsperiod by feeding them a good deal of bass to loosen them up more quickly, but not to the point you could burn them out!

Ive been running them (facing each other, one out of phase, etc) for the best part of the weekend to run them in. I reckon I have still have a few hours to go but will get back to everyone when done.
 
Any update as to your how your woofers and speakers sound? Also, some pictures would be great to show how you mounted the foam.

Also, did you do any update to the crossovers? A set of crossovers with 30-40 year old caps would suggest needing an update.

Ive been travelling with work and have only been able to gain around 12hrs of run in time. Haven't had time to 'test' the speakers but attached is the before and after photos of the surrounds.
I tested the caps via a multimeter and they all appeared to be fine. If the sound doesnt improve I may have to find a speaker repair place in Melbourne (Aus) as Im not as confident in upgrading or changing the caps in the crossovers.
(also -the image of the new surround looks like it isn't resting centred with the surround being thinner at the bottom. This is due to the angle of the photo as the cone is centred when you look at straight on)
