Need advice on wiring an IEC inlet for the first time

I have been doing a few mods to an Onkyo Integra M-504 (had to replace 8 filter caps, put on banana plugs) and I would like to add an inlet so I can get a removable and larger power cord. When I wire this new inlet should I use stranded or solid core wire and what gauge? I read on a few other posts to not add a ground wire if it didn't have one originally (to prevent ground loops). I just want some good advice and direction because I've never done this before and I want to make things better, not worse. Also, what is the best way to cut out the hole as clean as possible?

Right now the stock power cord is stranded 16awg wire that goes through the chassis and directly to the board. I'm using a new 12 awg power cord that really brought my Adcom to life, so I'm excited to try it on the Onkyo too. I will be powering acoustic research 312HO speakers that are rated at 4 ohm and I want to give them all the power they want :) Thanks guys for all of your assistance!

Agreed. Stranded, same size. Best tool for the cutting job would likely be a dremel with a cutting wheel. Followed by a file/files an/or an emery board. Good luck!

Alright. Thanks guys for chiming in! I didn't know if I should upgrade to 14 or 12awg since the new cord was bigger. I'll keep it 16 then. Just so I understand theory better, would increasing the internal gauge make the amp run hotter?
 
If you mean, will changing the internal mains to #14 or #12, then no. It won't make the amp run warmer.
