No. I unsoldered the leg of the diode that connected to the relay. Then I soldered a 100 ohm/2W resistor in series with the diode (i.e. soldered one end of the resistor to the diode lead that I just unsoldered, and soldered the other end of the resistor to the board where you just unsoldered the diode lead.) Since the 100 ohm resistor will dissipate heat, I mounted it above the board like similar resistors next to it. I also put heat shrink tubing on the resistor lead that went into the board. I replaced the diode with a new one at the same time.
