hey guys I need ur help!! I wanna build a cabinet or buy a vintage one and put all new guys in it. I'll put a pic of what I'm looking to buy/build. However, I'm new to turntables and I wanna make sure I get all the components I need so I can make sure it all fits. Could someone please help me? So far I've purchased a Techics sl-q2 that has been refurbished. I would like a tube system. My tt does not has a built in pre amp. Could someone please help me by advising me what other components I would need to complete this? Any advise or recommendations? Thanks ahead of time-josh

You should start by measuring the TT to see if it fits in the cab you like. Looks to me that the TT you have is too big for that cab. I would get the audio gear I want first, measure it all out and then look for a big enough cabinet. If you aren't stuck on the cabinet idea maybe shelves is an option - you have a lot more room and versatility that way.
 
Thanks! I agree. My tt measures 17" wide by 14.5" front to back. So yeah. I like the shelves idea as well. I was just thinking vintage would be cool. So as far as what equipment I would need....advise? I will post a pic of what I liked, but have no idea if it would work!! Lol. I was thinking tt-pre amp-amp-speakers. That would work right? If so, if I'm getting a tube amp, does my pre amp have to be tune as well to get the great sound? Thanks

Lol. Good point. That's why I'm here tho! Like I said....totally new to this. Some other write ups on the web had said these were really good sounding speakers for being inexpensive. Looking into some reasonable gear. Any ideas on what I SHOULD maybe get? I need to have all components in place (with measurements) prior to building or buying anything
 
My friend told me he would sell me this cabinet for $100. It was his grandparents and everything works. He has been wanting it out of the house for a while. I could either use what equipment is in there or swap out for my technics. Any thoughts? It cabinet and equipment is pristine

Sell me where everything works. My thought was just to remove his tt and put my technics in. Would that work?? And thank you guys for all he replies!
 
Not sure but that looks either Fisher or Pilot. Either way its tubed and very collectible and restorable. The guys over at the tube forum would be drooling (myself included) over it. The speakers are probably fine and are matched to this stereo set up.
 
So, just to be clear.....if my friends stuff works.....don't take anything out of there? Just use his stuff? Should I replace any tubes, capacitors, stylus? If so are those hard to find? Maybe I can do that and put my technics up for sale and recoup the cost I paid for the cabinet. I paid $150 for the technics. I'd be happy just getting that back, if I could. You guys rule!
 
If it does work, a basic recap will usually bring things back up to snuff and run safer for another 50 years or so. Tubes usually last a long long time but you can still have them tested and I will suspect that they will still test quite good. Stylus' can be found at such places like needle doctor and voice of music dot com.
 
That's a sweet Fisher system. You are asking a good question about the TT - I don't know how good that old one is. You can keep it in there and set your Technics on top or next to.

Also need to find out whether that Fisher amp has a low level phono input. If the original TT has a magnetic cart, it will. If not, you would need a little separate phono preamp to plug the Technics into.

The Fisher amp should be gone through and restored, even if it is working OK the old ancient power supply capacitors can fail, taking out tubes and transformers.

Get some model #s off it and post over in the Tube forum and get some of the tube Fisher gurus to give you some advice.
 
This is a nice little console but I suspect that Fisher is better quality stuff. Having said that I do have a very similar Maggie assuming this is a tuber also. Mine is a different cabinet but same sliding lid.

Kinda depends on the actual amps that are inside these consoles, and you can't always tell from looking at the cabinet. If you had pics of the guts and tube lineups, it might be easier. Given the choice myself based on only these pics I'd go for the Fisher just because it's not as common (at least in my neck of the woods) and it has a reputation superior to Maggie (in my mind anyway).
