Need new music

Super Member
I need some new music, i am like most everybody else here. I was raised on Led Zepplin, Aerosmith, Pink Floyd, Well you know the rest. I love all this music but i just can't listen to it anymore. I just don't know what else to listen to, i stand in front of my cd rack and just look at all my cd's, and i am just not interested in listening to it all again. I do like some country, but even that gets boring. :boring:

Here's a few good newer bands to get you started:

Gov't Mule - great hard rock with that classic touch to it
North Mississippi Allstars - maybe the best modern blues-rock group out there today
Hill Country Revue - saw these guys with the Allstars in a small club in SC and they were great
Drive By Truckers - i've heard these guys called the Guns n Roses of Country and the modern day Lynyrd Skynyrd, they flat out rock

i`ve been down that road, and i needed a change a well. my solution was moving backward, than forward, and expanding into new genre`s.

Moving Back: started listing to classic country. not that fag stuff like "brooks and dung" and "trace adkins" but the ol hard core honky tonk from the real legends like Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Porter Wagoner, Faron (hello walls) Young, Loretta Lynn (what a rack!!!), Kitty Wells, and the great Patsy Cline.
Also I discovered country`s original rap artist Red Sovine and his hit song "phantom 309".

Forward: The new hard rock/metal bands: Three Days Grace, Audioslave, Puddle of Mudd, Breaking Benjamin, Disturbed, Buckcherry, Danko Jones, etc.

New Genre`s: On my quest for something new and fresh, I developed a taste for top 40 pop and dance. Lady Ga Ga is at the top of my list (from pop) and I have to say if she continues on her trek she might rise higher than Madonna. As for dance well the beats all kinda sound similar but i really enjoy when they rip classic stuff. I love to play it when i`m hanging out or working, it really livens my mood. :tresbon:

"Exactly my delema". How many times can you listen to Dark Side of the Moon? Heard it 200+ times. I got into older jazz (50s-60s) and even the Delta Blues
(1925-1940), and 60-70s Blues (John Lee Hooker and BB King to a lesser degree, and others). I do have some older country but I'm not that into it.

Here's some:
Donald Fagen: Nightfly (excellent and even more excellent!!)

Aja / Gaucho (Steely Dan)

Miles Davis: Kind of Blue (one of the very best albums in the world, acclaimed, and I agree, it's just too much good. Jazz)

Arlo Guthrie: Alice's Resturaunt (Yeah!! - kinda of a flashback, I know, but cool if you don't have it! Always makes you smile and happy!!)

John Coltrane: Ballads (really beautiful music - Jazz but ballads! Not crazy, just wonderful sound and beautiful ballads, it's Coltrane.)

Ron Wood: Gimme Some Neck and 1,2,3,4. (old hard kickin rockin albums, really true straight up tear the house apart rockin, If you've never heard it, you'll dig it.)

John Lee Hooker: Mr. Lucky, and The Healer (Mr. Lucky has a 'host' of friends/guests! Check it out.)

Jeff Beck: Official Bootleg 06, and Live at the BB King Blues Club. Both are incredable. They come in 'CD only'. If you can get the Japanese pressed CDs!! But
the USA pressed CDs sound good too, I have them both. These will be an eBay purchase only. Both these albums are most excellent, I think his best ever. Both Live and hot.

Azimuth: Telecommunications (just takes you on a trip!) Very hard to find. Brazilian Jazzy. Thier 'best' album. Wish I had it on CD or LP.

Keith Richards: Talk is Cheap (it sure is)

The Fagen's 'Nightfly' album is something else. It's really good. It's just toooooo gooooood and the songs just stick in your head. Saw it somewhere that it was voted as one of the best 20 albums in the world. No doubt about it, I love it. Just bought another LP sealed 'today', on eBay, for storage! I really like that album.

Good luck!!!!!!!

Start exploring a whole different genre, maybe Jazz. It's like starting fresh... you get to discover all this incredible music that's just waiting for you...

A new genre/Pandora

Go to pandora and put in some band name name from a different genre.

Try Massive Attack or SneakerPimps for Trip Hop
Try Miles Davis or Lou Donaldson for Jazz
For Country try Patsy Cline or Buck Owens or Johnny Cash

Start writing down the names of the bands you like then explore them.

go buy a copy of Mojo (the music magazine) they always have about a million reviews of new and reissued music plus features that make you want to hear the music they write about.

Don't think about this, just do it:

Buy the new Black Keys CD "Brothers" and never look back. It's just kicks!

Go to Last.fm and type in Led Zeppelin, or Pink Floyd..it should start playing bands that people who like those bands also like. It's a great way to discover new music. Or go to Amazon or iTunes and click on a band, and you should see "those who like (x) also bought (y)". I've found a lot of new music that I like this way.

Karen Elson - The Ghost Who Walks
Alberta Cross - Broken Side of Time
Foals - Total Life Forever
Local Natives - Gorilla Manor
Civil Twilight - S/T
Kerretta - Vilayer
Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros
Fanfarlo
Dr. Dog
The Clientele
Phosphorescent
Josh Ritter
Ryan Adams and the Cardinals
Andrew Bird
Toundra - II

It's one of the reasons (among many) I like vinyl. I'll spend 0.50 or a buck on some old record with an interesting cover to see if I discover some new-to-me music. I'd say my success rate is around 80% so far.

That's exactly what I did getting into Jazz, Brazilian Jazz, Delta Blues, and Blues. It 'was' like a fresh start and now, after years, when I listen to some of the rock stuff...it sounds ok again! Just don't play it over and over and over. Guess my music tastes have broadened. :>)

It also helped being in Japan a lot. Japan is all Jazz heads.

And yes...it's kinda hard not to love 50 cent LP albums!! And there is some really good stuff out there that you would never have even thought you'ld like. But you do!

Or classical, for that matter. Visit your local library and start with some "warhorses" -- classical works that are frequently performed and recorded because so many people love them. Between jazz and classical, there's a lifetime's worth of music out there just waiting for you to discover it.
