I have a pair of cerwin vega hed U-321 12" speakers powered by a pioneer sx-1050. One has a blown horn tweeter. I don't really know what to look for. The back of the tweeter says cv, c5, 8 ohms, and 8125

I'd be scanning fleabay for some used but working "Cerwin Vega Tweeters", or maybe just "Vintage Tweeters" or "Horn Tweeters" (search the "Vintage Electronics" and "Home Audio" sub-classifications) as some sellers don't put much information in the auction titles. C-V sourced many Japanese made horn loaded tweeters from Foster/Fostex, so including those names in a fleabay tweeter search aid also. If you like the sound of a speaker, its usually best to keep it stock if that's possible (and at a reasonable price).

I had great luck replacing my hed tweeters with a pair of vifa domes from parts express. Big big improvement over the harsh sounding stock tweeters. Cerwins can pound out the bass for sure but their tweeter department needs help. It's really not hard at all to find better tweeters than those stock plastic horns.

It’s not the circuit breaker. And I checked the resistance on both tweeters and got around 7.5 ohms, so I don't think there really blown. But they seem to be real scratchy and sound terrible. I have tried changing the crossover settings and it hasn't helped. Could my problem be from the receiver maybe? I have never cleaned the switches or pots, and I know the volume pot is scratchy.

What size tweeters did you get. Im seeing mostly 1" domes. Wouldn't that be too small for the existing hole in the hed speakers?

Northaudio, one of the main things you need to be aware of in replacement tweeters is how efficient they are relative to the ones you are replacing. C-V speakers tend to be very efficient which is one of the reasons they use horn loaded tweeters (as well as the fact they can play louder before self destructing). If a replacement tweeter has too low of efficiency it will never put out enough sound to match the other drivers even with the level control L-pad full open. So while tweeter shopping look for the highest efficiency rating you can get among tweeters with otherwise similar performance specs.

I had a pair of MSC speakers with flaky circuit breakers that didn't make good contact when engaged. I bypassed them and all was well.
