If you want some cheap re-paint ideas, I painted a 1200 about 6 months ago and it still looks great with no scratches. I posted this about it..

Not sure about getting this paint in Oz though, but look for appliance paint.

The paint on my '1200 was a little rough so I repainted mine. I completely agree. To get it to look good, it's going to take time. I used satin black on mine. Spray a couple of coats, wait a day or two, wet sand, and repeat. I put about six coats on. With all the wet sanding (up to 2000 grit) it actually looks like semi-gloss. It looks like a fairly new SL-1210 now.

Good news , the new tonearm sorted your issue. I noticed in your picture the anti skate was on zero.it helps to ensure you set this correctly, search on line for some vids on setting this correctly

Wow that looks great. Right this moment I have a can of quality black paint and clear coat, with the intention of going piano-gloss black

but your paintjob looks so good i might do that instead. How accurate does the colour look to a factory technics? How tough does the paint feel?
