Needing speakers for sansui G7000

Just picked up a very nice Sansui G7000. Needing ideas for a set of decent speakers to pair with it. I have some older pioneers that are rated at 35W each but I’m wanting to upgrade. These were yard sale specials that just sound okay.

I’m interested in vintage as well as newer bookshelves, but would like to keep my budget around $250 or so. I’m also willing to fix up/refoam vintage speakers as long as everything else is in good shape. I love that sansui sound. Listen to everything from classic rock, country, rap, you name it. Just needing a good all around set up

The good news is that that receiver has about 85 WPC according to HFE so you're not limited to overly sensitive speakers unless you're trying to fill a huge room at reference levels.

My recommendation would be a pair of Rectilinear IIIs as they're my current favorite speakers to run without a sub, but you have a LOT of choices. They are, however, old speakers and will need at least new crossover caps to sing properly. Mine sounded like arse until I recapped them.

More detailed recommendations could be made if we knew what kind of music you listened to, are you a basshead, do you value detail and imaging, etc.? Unfortunately if you want "one speaker to rule them all" barring a thrift store mega score compromises will have to be made, although at $250 I'm willing to bet we can fix you up with something with which you'll be very happy and your non-audiophile friends will thing are just amazing.

Also, if you are serious about sticking with bookshelves, I have been impressed with the low end extension of both Energy and Canton small speakers. It's like they're bending the rules of physics to get such sound out of such a small enclosure.

Another option would be considering just getting some good bookshelves now and keeping an eye out for a powered sub with speaker level inputs to fill in the last couple octaves. That's what I'm doing at work right now. Little Canton Plus S speakers and some Boston sub hidden under my desk. My boss was amazed over the holidays when we both ended up at the office at the same time, he still liked it after I showed him the box hidden under my desk :)

I do like some bass, but I am not overly obsessed with it. I want to be able to hear everything and just fill my garage/man cave with all around good sounds. I just don’t know what brands/models to keep an eye out for. I have a pair of pioneer FS-9001 speakers as well, rated at 150 watts but they need refoamed at the very least. I can’t find much information on them though. I’m guessing they are bottom of the line?

First,...

Welcome to the AK Community! A ton of helpful folks in here to assist you.

Second,...

I've never owed this receiver and can't make a recommendation but in doing a quick search I found this thread:

http://audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/sansui-g-7000-speaker-advice.210841/

....a few other threads mentioned vintage Advents also.

The search window above is a powerful tool. Once you find the speakers that you would like to purchase, become an AK subscriber and then check out Barter Town. You might find a good deal on the speakers from other AK members.

Good Luck! :)

Haven’t had much luck coming up with anything locally right now. Keeping an eye out at a couple thrift shops and Facebook market place. I think I’ve decided I’m probably going to go with vintage right now, but still not sure what all to keep my eye out for?

Some old Pioneers are very well thought of. Which ones do you have? Have you replaced the capacitors? Their lifespan is expected to be 20-30 year max, are yours around that age? If so it's probable you aren't hearing them at their best.

As far as them being yard sale speakers, that has nothing to do with quality. My NL Advents were picked up by the side of the road for free and they're a great set of speakers.

If you post your location, odds are people will start looking at your local Craigslist for suggestions.

Any of the ADS 2 way (l520, l570, l620). Sometimes, even the l710's (3 way) can be found in you price range. I have the 710's but paid a bit more because they came with stands. Most of the ADS have rubber surrounds which last MUCH longer than foam.

Also the Polk Monitor 7's are very well liked by some.

In my collection I have the G-7500...If you like rap, classic rock and music with high energy in general, and if you want to stay vintage, some of these may be a bit more than your budget but you can try :

JBL L100's, or 4311's,
Altec lansing model nine or fifteen series ll,
Klipsch Heresy ll,
Realistic Mach 1,
Cerwin Vega D3 or D5,
Pioneer HPM 100's
to mention a few. some are harder to find.

if you want to stay with Sansui, then for $250 I would try SP-300's or SP-2000's

Matching speakers to your taste is a journey, we can only give you an idea of what we like, and everyone likes something different...but ive learned that speakers are one of the more important pieces in the chain and one should spend a bit more money on speakers. I ended up with B&W DM6's...for my ears they do everything right with every music genre...:)

The pioneers I use right now are CS-610 3 ways. I also have a set of CS-F9001 3 ways that need refoamed. Wasn’t sure if that set was worth fixing up or not. I am in central IL. About an hour north of STL

not familiar with those, they look okay. if they sound good to you and they make the music sound good, such as nothing distorted or muddy then they could be just fine. but, if your asking me if the pioneers sound better than the list i gave you, then in my opinion, no...Depends what you want to achieve from this journey. From my experience this hobby can be expensive and a bit addictive if you get bitten by the bug :) but at the same time its fun...if you have a goodwill, thrift shop, yard sales close by, its always a good way to get into this hobby, and try different speakers without breaking the bank :)

How much space for the speakers do you have and how big is the room? The larger vintage "bookshelf" speakers need to be at ear level to sound the best but space can be an issue with them.

I have found a set of large advents not real far from me that are all original except have been refoamed before. Thinking about trying these out

Are those the ones that have been reconed several times? That would make me nervous. And if those are the ones, that's a high price for the vinyl covered. I'd expect that to be the price for the veneered ones in very good shape, at least around here.

I enjoy my new large Advents.

Well I picked them up Saturday morning and wow I like them. What an upgrade from my others. The cabinets are in really decent shape, and the foam is perfect on them. I’ll try to get some pics tomorrow. So far I’m happy!
