Neighbors and loud music

I have actually been in jail for a loud stereo.

Yep, me too. I was sentenced to 7 days and got out in 3. Bros were asking me what I was in for and they cracked up laughing when I told them for cranking Judas Priest and Iron Maiden

All of my gear's currently packed away as we're in about the middle of a big renovation project on our 120+ year old house. All new windows have been installed, Crestline double-hungs with insulated glass, of course. They replaced ancient sash windows with aluminum storms. I'm thinking the windows alone will cut external sound emission a lot...since my lil' SX580/ADS combo can really surprise with levels attainable and bass output. The insulation guys will be here next...further improvement expected. Then...the LR & DR get drywall over the existing tongue & groove wood/wallpaper combo. More improvement expected. I've already noticed a reduction in outside noise coming in due to the new windows.

BTW, I live on a corner lot in a smallish town...vacant lot on two sides...cool neighbors across the street.

Turns out Preacher Bob next door, (he really is a preacher) is a big fan of SRV, just like me, but takes offense at me playing it loud at 1:30 am.

WHO KNEW????????

Not unlike my situation. Corner lot, business on one side that's typical business hours and no weekends.

Never had a complaint from my house system despite a pretty powerful setup. The garage system, OTOH, that's a different story. Immediate neighbors didn't complain, in fact they made requests. The fellow on the far opposite corner of the next block apparently wasn't up for some tunage though because I had a couple visits and the officer sorta spilt the beans.

I have ZERO interest in knowing the cops in town. Got nothing personal against them, but I figure overall it's just better if we don't interact on a regular basis. So, I just don't crank up that system too much anymore.

I live in a condo.... I think i am referenced in this thread.. my old very inconsiderate d-bag neighbor constantly was sending bass through my walls, the walls of this condo are actually pretty robust I've had 2 other neighbors in that unit over a couple years and basically never hear the new neighbors or the original neighbors ..just the total asshat in middle... oh well that had been leasing the condo and they got evicted ... lol.. I guess for the noise complaints among other things..

since I get along pretty well with my new neighbors I have TT them and they have been over and we have been over there ... I am careful with the volume and they never hear my stereo ...

I would in a perfect world like to crank it sometimes... but I wouldn't really enjoy it if i knew if was bothering people... so I don't because I know all too well how annoying it is to have someone's music disturbing your home.

I live in a intercostal waterfront two story condo, I'm lucky that both condos beside my unit are not full timers, one of the units has snowbirds in it 4 months of the year. My listening levels are not excessive, low to mid 80's, but I will crank the epic movie during home theater sessions. Block wall construction with drywall and concrete slab floors with bamboo hardwood and hurricane rated Windows and doors put a damper on sound transmission, sub is on a subdude to help. I have cranked it to stupid levels and went next door on both sides to check for issues, not bad at those levels but a little consideration is always in order.

In those cases it really not the sound level you hear, it's the sub you can feel, those Salk/Rythmic subs really do the job...

6 months ago our new neighbors moved into the house which is about 15' away. He is part of a band that sometimes practices 5 -7 pm on Sundays in the basement. Their only basement window opens up facing our front porch and door. It is audible from our porch and in the house with windows open and especially through the screen door. They're working on some cooling solutions to be able to keep the window closed in the future. When my wife has been out I would use those practices to camouflage some louder than normal listening of my own music.

Also might be a good idea to wander around your neighbors yards late night ... maybe peek in the windows and see if they look bothered ...

... or maybe not ... <G>

Thats funny.:lmao:.
For me a basement helps.I don't play music that loud very often because I have a family at home.I do like airing the CVs every now and then along with more than a few beers when the chance come along.Do what you have to to be considerate of others.I don't think many people like being bothered with someone else loud music.

I've rocked my neighbors a time or two over the years I'm sure. They never complained but they probably should have. When my amps start working sometimes I can't resist turning up the volume. A few scotches doesn't help either!

First thing I did, 7 years ago, was to meet my new neighbours,
and let them know that I LOVE music.
I told them that it would only ever be 10am to 6pm weekdays, midday to 6pm weekends, well within council rules.
Not a complaint ever.
Windows closed and curtains drawn to help with noise abatement.
I did the same.

I would usually play my music every second Wednesday from 5 - 10pm then had to change my life style as i now have a young family. Now its once a month on a Saturday arvo i would play my music and usually cut it off around 8pm. My house is on a corner block and i have spoken to my neighbors and she commented how come you don't play your music on Wednesday nights anymore and i told her its respecting my family and my neighbors, plus it during the school -working week. My music selection is very diverse from 60's, 70s, 80's, 90's to new music and i have a funny feeling they would listen and enjoy as she has asked i would love some 60's songs to burn on a disc as they're an old couple.

I was thinking about doing a walk around but you know what, its Sat arvo and its once a month.

My wife and I welcomed our new neighbors (at that time; the time I'm about to describe).
She went so far as to do the bake a welcome to the neighborhood cake thing for them, as a welcome to the neighborhood. They crudely grabbed on, and huddled over it, with barely a thanks.

Time passed, and, in getting to "know" them, we come to the realization that they were, quoting him directly, Mexican Mafia gang members.
He loved his Rap music, and liked it really loud. He then wrecked his POS of a car, which had the trunk jammed full of cheap subwoofers and their cabinet. He then brought it into the house, and put it next to the wall that divided our place from theirs.
I thought, lets try to be neighborly, and asked if he'd mind not listening to it at ridiculously loud levels, as we, and everyone else around us were growing weary of loud Boom Boom monotone bass drum stimulation that used to rattle his license plate.
This met with a classic childish response of turning it up, and leaving it up well into the deep of night. He'd return home from whatever it was that he was doing (had no job), and crank it up at 2am, 3am, or whenever he was home.
So, we called the cops. The response was luke warm at best, by the cops; extremely low priority level to them in the big county (Orange County Ca.). They'd arrive, and tell him to turn it down; it would be turned down until he saw them turn the corner leaving, and then back up it went.
This went on for the better part of a year, when we realized that he was beating the wife and kids, and dogs.
So, I called Animal Services, and for Welfare checks, regarding the arguing and crashing of furniture, and animal neglect. The cops would show up, do mostly nothing, and the music would get turned back up to ten. He'd stare into my neighbors house, and watch them intensely (a mom and her daughter), and it creeped them out entirely.
Finally, after calling Animal Services one day, when the dogs looked starving and without water, they took the dogs. This enraged the guy. He became a belligerent a-hole, to a fine degree, and everything that he did became loud, including banging on the walls to the beat of his music.

One night he came home high/drunk/or otherwise artificially stupider than his normal demeanor. He left his own house one night, and came around to our end of the duplex, and had a really loud phone conversation outside of our master bedroom window in the wee hours of the morning (again at like 3am). My wife asked thru the window if he'd please take his phone conversation back into his own house. He became belligerent again, but fortunately, the association sprinklers came on, and chased him off (I knew nothing of this occurrence having slept right thru it).
The next morning, he came onto our patio and started yelling at me thru the screen door about how he had every right to be taking on the phone where he was, and we had no right to turn the sprinklers on him; we didn't, it was HOA timed sprinklers.
I'm a really big guy, and got up, and told him to get the F off of our property, and he became even more belligerent, and tried to come into the house yelling at us. So, I literally pushed him off the patio, and, down the pathway to the sidewalk. I stood there telling him to go, and not come back up the pathway. In doing so, I grabbed the garden hose, a 3/4" rubber construction hose that is bigger than normal homeowner hoses, with a brass end on it. I charged it with pressure, and filled it with water, intending to use it as a weapon if he came back up the pathway. A heavy hose with brass end on it will have a serious punch to it.
He came back at me, and I turned the hose on him, and sprayed him directly in the face with a solid stream, which totally shocked him. He was totally flustered by that, and started screaming, but the water worked, and he started to go away, until he got next to my fence line. My wife had put a small concrete peace dove on a rock there, and he picked it up, and threw it at me with full intention of hurting me with it. I sidestepped it, and it hit a short fence post for a gate that enclosed our patio area. It broke off a copper top cap for the post, and damaged the post; it left damage and marks, and showed intent.
I looked at my wife, and told her to call the cops, that i was going to send this a-hole to jail for assault.
He suddenly changed his demeanor to that of being extremely apologetic, and begging us not to call the cops. We did.
The cops came, and heard our story, and they were going to arrest me for assaulting him by spraying him in the face with water.
My wife went into a panic, and took the cops aside, and, in an act that deserves an award, told them about her fear of him as a woman, how we were surrounded by other women who also feared him, and of our reports of spousal and child abuse (our neighbors were all women; me being the only guy around).
So, at her insistence, they started to believe us, and did a background check on the guy; two felony assaults with deadly weapon convictions already, with time served. In Cal, three felony assaults is a life sentence.
Suddenly, the believed us, as I have no record, no tickets, nothing; a totally clean record. He was covered in gang tattoos, which they identified him by.
By this point all of the gals were awake, and aware, and out there in support of us. He tried resisting arrest, and ended up face first on the concrete with a knee on his neck, and in handcuffs.
They hauled him off, and charged him with strike three felony assault.
Ultimately, the DA didn't see it fit to charge him with anything, other than misdemeanor assault, and probation.
His family had to move out, because they could't pay the rent.
He ended up plea bargaining to the misdemeanor charge, and got time served and probation. He was locked up for 9 months before his release.
In that 9 months, we fixed up the house, and moved from that area, which had become a ghetto, where we no longer spoke the language, and moved out to the country area of SoCal. We sold the house and started looking for a new place.
Now, were no longer attached to another house. We're on an acre, which provides us with wonderful buffer area around us. We have wonderful neighbors, all of whom are retired, with us being the young whippersnappers. I can listen to music as loud as I want, and there is no one around us to hear it. I don't listen to loud music, or, to music loud. This has never been an issue anyway.

My goodness you've had a interesting (Chinese style) last couple of years. I'm glad to hear that things are better now.

As others have said, walking around the outside of your house while music is playing is a pretty good way to tell. If nothing happens to your system, speakers in particular while you're in the room, nothing should happen while you're outdoors for a few minutes. It's not like the drivers are going to say to each other, "Quick! Let's blow while he's outside!" :D

Another culprit that hasn't been mentioned is the Home Theater in a Box crowd. More times then not they have no real concept of it other then it's cool and they can listen to sports, movies, gaming etc in Surround Sound.

A poorly set up HT in a Box can be VERY annoying. I was talking with my tech the other day and we both couldn't understand why some manufacturers would make speakers that literally you can hang on a wall. I'm not talking via a wall mount bracket but literally hung on the wall.

If you have ever had the misfortune of having to listen the constant Ooomp, Ooomp , Ooomp bass drone emanating from tiny to mid size speakers hanging from a wall you'll know what misery can be.

It's not a loudness thing per se just a repetitive annoyance.

That being said back to the OP's question. Common courtesy, a lost art these days, and general awareness of your neighbors would be your best bet.

To mfrench,I've heard of tales like yours.Be glad no one was seriously hurt.People like this have no business walking the earth.Music can be used to antagonize people also, much as it may be hard for some to beleive.Must have been a nightmare living next to this pos.

I really enjoy playing my music loud but I am also very cognizant of the potential annoyance it might cause to others. As silly as it might sound, sometimes I don't feel like I can truly enjoy my music if I know that it is bothering someone else. I have a few questions which I find myself constantly curious about.

I feel the same way sometimes. It is an anxious feeling. I dont get it every time but once in a while I do.

Usually in the day time, before 3pm, I listen as loud as I want. After 3, I think kids might be doing homework, dinner, people getting home from work who have been up since 3am, etc...

Anything before 3pm and after 10am, I dont really feel bad. Then again, it isnt too loud outside (well I dont think so anyways). My 12" powered Velodyne really shakes the walls in my room but outside, it is hard to hear.

I would only worry about late at night to be honest, or if a neighbor has complained. So far, neither has happened with me. Then again, I am not a teenager anymore, otherwise, things would probably me MUCH different! I know I pissed off ALLOT of people in my teens.

Hey, he was on your property, he was lucky all he got was the hose!

If you dont mind, what area of OC was this? I was born and raised in Westminster (Little Saigon) on the border of Santa Ana. So I am VERY familiar with those types (childish gang bangers).
