Neighbors and loud music

I've thought about this, but at those volume levels I really don't really want to be more than a dozen feet from the equipment so I can constantly keep an eye on things, especially with electronic music where I'm also often pushing my woofers to their limits. This is what it might ultimately come down to though.

If you are pushing the woofers to the limit, to the point of voice coil overexcursion (which sounds it sounds like from your description) then it's probably too loud.

Depends of course on how close the neighbors are.

Starting to sound like one of those "you know you're a redneck" kinda thangs ...

You know you're too loud if the house is shifting off the foundation and the horses are spooked ...

That is not necessarily the case, as there are a number of variables at play. It only generally occurs with electronic music or other content with artificially accentuated very low-frequency bass. The content was clearly designed with subwoofers in mind, especially at higher levels of output. I am happy with the level of bass that I am able to achieve, but it does require me to ask a lot of my woofers. Other genres I'd probably destroy the tweeters and mids before I ever caused an over-excursion of the woofer.

I was referring to this part of your earlier post (which IS overexcursion):

There have been times in the past when I have pushed some of my woofers too far, which typically results in a heart-stopping "THWACK" that sounds like a wrist-rocket slingshot hitting a paper-plate at close range as the voice coil hits part of the magnet assembly :tears: It it something that very rarely happens, but nonetheless is at the very front of my mind whenever I am playing music with lots of bass loudly.

Sounds like that isn't the case here.

Hey, he was on your property, he was lucky all he got was the hose!

If you dont mind, what area of OC was this? I was born and raised in Westminster (Little Saigon) on the border of Santa Ana. So I am VERY familiar with those types (childish gang bangers).

We were in Aliso Viejo, which was in an area that was referred to as Laguna Hills. A.V. annexed our community when the city began it charter. The border was literally 8' behind our house. I always referred to it as Laguna Hills, as thats what it was when we bought the house.
The nearest major cross street that most people know would be EL Toro Rd. and Moulton Pkwy. We were about a mile south of that, off Moulton.
It was a development that was intended to be part of Leisure World, but, L.W. never claimed it as theirs, after they built it. It was an area of duplexes and quad units.
If not for where we were at, at the edge of the complex, with a multi-million dollar view, in a working class neighborhood, we'd have been gone long before we did. But, we had a 180º view of the Saddleback Mtn range, from Tustin to San Clemente. The view kept us there long after it became a ghetto.
A sunrise from next to the master bedroom, overlooking the Saddleback range. The camera did no justice to the view:

You know it's too loud when the seismologists in Hawaii call to say "would you turn it down a little?"*

*If you live somewhere in the Hawaiian Islands, then the seismologists could be anywhere else.

I would listen outside the house but DEFINITELY talk to the neighbors and let them know that you don't want to bother them. Give them your phone number (something I would recommend anyway) and ask them to call or stop by if the music bothers them. This could prevent a call to the cops. Not only keeping you from being hassled but also allowing the cops to deal with more pressing issues.

At any rate... you DON'T want to end up being THIS guy!!

I was wondering how long it would take for this to come up. To me, by far the easiest thing is to just ask them.

The easiest thing to do is just not play it so flipping loud it has to be a potential concern of disturbing them in the first place. ;) That you have to do that is a strong indication it is inherently a disturbance. If it's that loud and the cops happen to be in the vicinity they probably won't need an official complaint to stop over. They don't need a formal complaint here...that was one of my visits when I was playing out in the garage.

Don't get me started... I hit the sh*tty neighbor trifecta.

You know, I can't even get into this topic right now... It'll poison my mood for the whole afternoon.... Sorry.

Bass is gonna be the main thing you need to worry about because it goes through material better.
I think there is a difference between letting your gear unattended vs someone else driving your car.
Unless you have a 3 year old kid that would just likes to crank up the volume while you are not by your stuff I wouldn't worry anything about your gear.

I don't worry much about unauthorized twiddling on my system ... especially if I put it in "party mode" ...

Howard Hughes' hi-fi system...

"It's OK, Ava... You're in the safe zone."

Only person qualified to operate that system would be one of those Chinese acrobats from Cirque De Soleis, or maybe Catherine Zeta-Jones.

I have neighbors that play SCREAMING loud heavy metal all the time. It makes me bottle up my anger until the day I finally snap and go dump buckets of my dog's poops on their cars.

That's why I never invite her over anymore ...
