We are separating unlimited DVDs by mail and unlimited streaming into two separate plans to better reflect the costs of each. Now our members have a choice: a streaming only plan, a DVD only plan, or both.

Your current $9.99 a month membership for unlimited streaming and unlimited DVDs will be split into 2 distinct plans:

Plan 1: Unlimited Streaming (no DVDs) for $7.99 a month
Plan 2: Unlimited DVDs, 1 out at-a-time (no streaming) for $7.99 a month

Your price for getting both of these plans will be $15.98 a month ($7.99 + $7.99). You don't need to do anything to continue your memberships for both unlimited streaming and unlimited DVDs.

These prices will start for charges on or after September 1, 2011.

Some might say, "Hey, it's only another $5.99 a month, no big deal"

Others, like may may say. "WTF, a 60% price increase???"

I'd like a 60% raise too...

Let's say gas went from $3.69/gal to $5.90....:D

FWIW, they could lose 30% of their subscribers and still have higher revenues
 
yep, yikes! i will probably be going back down to streaming, if i don't cancel altogether. i don't think i watch enough movies to justify the extra $6 when i live a block away from 3 redbox units.
 
I got that a couple weeks ago myself.... been mulling it over... I only get maybe 2 or three DVD's a month... at that price, probably just as cheap and easy to rent a movie PPV or from Amazon..

I wish they would just do it all streaming... Or at least get a better newer selection for streaming.. some good old movies I watch, but I'm more interested in new stuff...

No, I have not yet received that notification. They already raised my fees by $1/month at the beginning of the year. If they try to raise it again on me this same year, I am going to be cutting some service, and probably either just go to streaming at the prices you state, or simply cut them off altogether.

My current plan involves getting BD discs, so it is higher than your $9.99/month plan.

Anyway, I am not going to be paying more per month than I am now, at least not until a reasonable time has passed. That earlier $1/month raise was a high enough percentage to take care of any reasonable increases in their costs, and I am not going to be gouged by greedy [insert word here that is not acceptable for this site].

People who sell BDs and DVDs are probably very happy about this, as some of us will probably be buying more than we do at present, after canceling Netflix rental service.
 
I may just cancel Netflix and DirectTV in general...I am never home and really dont miss watching TV. I am usually with my family, the gym, outdoors or listening to music...when not at work or sleeping.
 
I haven't had pay TV since 2007 and I honestly don't miss it. (Yeah, the early post-season of the major sports are usually on cable, but the finals are on network.) I've had Netflix for about 8 years though and I think it's the best entertainment for the dollar available. The selection is unmatched by any brick and mortar store and I don't have to leave the house. I'll pay more if I have to.

That is not saying much. Netflix does not have enough streaming new content and their streaming selection of older movies is a little thin. So a price increase is not warranted.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is traced down the supply chain to the studios/those who own the rights of the films charging them more. I don't know that anybody thought that netflix would be as popular as it is, or as much of a threat to film sales.

Just a guess. Who knows.
 
Funny I have not gotten it yet. If they do that I will cancel it all together and stick with my cable or maybe use one of the other services.
 
I've always had have the more expensive plan ($19.99/month?) and there is no price increase for that plan that I'm aware of.

Blockbuster literally laughed at them... now this week they announce closing three more stores in Honolulu.

Content costs money.

Still - that's a HUGE increase.

I enjoy the DVDs and do two at a time. The streaming selection and quality leaves much to be desired, though. I may drop the streaming if that's the case.

The next cost battle will be the bandwidth costs that Netflix is hogging in the evenings.

Just looked...mine's going from 17.99 (2 at a time w/Blu Ray + unlimited Instant) to 22.98 starting in September. That's still cheaper than seeing a movie in the theater for twp people. It's the times we live in I suppose.

Sadly that's a unnecessary battle, that is being forced upon us by the big 3 cable providers. Bandwidth is no longer an issue, with he advent of fiber (10gigabit upstream and downstream) . The problem is that Com......Xfinity (excuse me), Time Warner, and AT&T have no real competition. Sure they all compete with each other, but when both your competitors offer the same over priced package as you do than whats the incentive to change. Hopefully we get more ISP's like Sonic out of California that have proven that you pay the exact same rate you do now for copper that you do with fiber.
 
Mine's getting cheaper. I only stream, but when I signed up they didn't have a "streaming only" plan as an option. Now I can save a buck a month! Wheee! :banana:

AT&T has already imposed a 150GB/Month download limit, so I watched all six seasons of "Lost" over a month, streaming wireless on a Roku on AT&T DSL. Used a whopping 49GB that whole time. My DSL won't support the HD quality, 4 dots is as good as my streaming gets. SO I save a lot of bandwidth and the PQ is perfectly acceptable for what it is.

I have the Blu-Ray option but honestly Im finding it harder to find Movies I haven't already seen and its just easier to use the streaming service since I mainly use it to watch TV series that I missed in the past.

The number of streaming services is increasing and so is the cost of those big deals made for content, Supply and demand at its worst (for us)

I will be dropping the Disc option no doubt and will use other providers like amazon or Vudu or a number of other options I have using the BB.

I think thats too much of an increase unless they have a deal for up to date content like new releases ( wich could be one reason for this increase).
