New Announcements from McIntosh!

My congratulation to the new power amps. The amps having a very modern, slim and sleekly look. My kids love these amps.

I would like to buy one for the bedroom, but the amps are to deep with 50cm.
I would like to see also a peak function, because I love this function and I let all my Mcintosh amps on peak power level. It is always good to know which power levels are receving the speakers. It would be nice, when Mcintosh can change this on a next update.

So too sum up, great amps, great modern design, but please cut them 10cm in the deep and put on again a peak power level function.:thmbsp:

Let's see you can buy a a 301 for less than half the price of a 2301, thats a great deal. you can also buy a 152 for less than half the price of 2 275 VI"s running mono. Great entry prices. Would you rather have 2 MC-301's and a C-48, or a MA 8000? Wonder how many people would be interested in a MX-110 z AM/FM reissue with a DAC built in? It would go great with all these new amps and the 275.
 
I've had four or five MX110s. My biggest gripe with them was simply the lack of inputs so the DAC idea is a good one twiiii.

Now back to the regularly scheduled programming.

BTW, the cans are $2,000 retail. That puts them out of reach for me . . .

I can't wait to see the HeadFi guys give them a review. At that price point they will absolutely TEAR them apart if the performance is not on par.
 
They might be worth it, but that's a tough row to hoe for sure. The really devoted can guys will spend that much and more easily, but there is almost no tougher crowd to please...

I heard the phones with an MHA100 at the Mc event at House of Music in San Francisco last Saturday (11/8/14) (having no idea what they cost) and liked them a lot - excellent sound and very comfortable. But I don't use headphones.

One thing that no one mentioned (that I saw) in these threads about the new power amps is size / weight. The MC 301 weighs 67 pounds and so I can move one myself.

Some of the other Mc amps mentioned in the threads are 100 lbs or more and require two people to lift which has made me reluctant to buy the larger SS Mc amps over the years.
 
I have moved my 601s on my own a couple of times now. It's an absurd amount of weight. I don't even want to think about moving MC1.2Kws. 802 Diamond B&Ws are also not fun for the record.
 
I was moving and cleaning my 207's the other day and they are no fun either. Can you imagine having to lift those mothers if they had 7 output autoformers. It would be like lifting 4 MC 252's at once. The heaviest amp I ever tackled was a MC 2600 and that's was a long time ago when they were first introduced. I can't imagine trying to lift a 452, 601 or my favorite 1.2K. Me and my Chiropractor are becoming good friends now and I don't want a permanent relations ship. It was bad enough when I was young and foolish lifting 3500's and 2105's. When we installed 2300's in old Mexico it was nothing to see a small worker, maybe 5 ft tall throw a boxed 2300 on his back using a strap to secure the unit and run up flight of stairs like it was nothing. OH! my aching back!
 
Yep, the MC452 is heavy as all you know what!! but its not something I move every day so I am all good with it!!
 
Not sure why anyone would need to move these amps very often. Mine haven't been moved since they were put in place. In any event, why not plan so that they dont have to be moved? The weight was never a consideration for me.

I would get two MC2301's in a heartbeat if I had the cash. Then I would beg for some helpers. :).

Talking about power vs cost is not a linear mathematical function. Power is logarithmic and money is linear. Remember it takes just as much labor to build a 301 as it does a 601. I can imagine the engineering and computer time to develop the 301 was as involved as the 601. The components for the build with inflation are more costly, too . Then remember a 225 was $229.00 a 240 $288.oo and a 275 $444.00. So the 240 was a steal. For twice the price of a 225 a 275 had 3 times the power. To look at another way with your thinking a 225 was a rip off with only a 1/3 the power for half the cost. When I changed from 240's to 275's it wasn't for the power. It was for the extended tube life of the KT-88 which ran a lot cooler and the quality of the sound not the quantity. It would be interesting to compare the sound of three 152's versus my 207. I know my woofers will prefer the 207 but the midrange, tweeters and super tweeters may prefer the 152's. I'll have to put that on my bucket list. Some might ask why not try an 8207? Well if you guys cringe for the lack of knobs. Think about those awful displays that are suppose to substitute for traditional Mcintosh meters. To show my age, I much preferred the movements in the 2105, 2505 and 3500 meters to the new meters of today.

Some of us move... In my case, somewhat regularly.
 
The weight of amps is definitely a factor for me. My MC352 has gone without new bulbs for a while because of the effort of getting it to a service center and back. Even though I don't plan on moving for a while I have to admit I've considered parting with it for something that isn't so big and heavy, especially as its unlikely I'll ever actually need that much juice.

I used to read many comments about bigger is better for increased dynamic range, etc. Now many comments deal with unwieldy weight. I owned both an MC2125 and MC300 and when my wife said one had to go I kept the 2125. I guess though it depends how efficient your speakers are and how loud you listen.
