My mistake. On my phone so the auto correct isn’t doing me any favors haha.
What are your thoughts on the 230A as a first vintage receiver?
 
The 230A is a very nice little pal. Not that much WPC power, but I think that the watts per channel criterion is overestimated too often. However, I love its sound and its design.

I was a little worried about such low wpc,
Currently running an onkyo 30wpc amp...
But that gets plenty loud in my small room and didn’t feel like the best match for these old Jensen TF-3 speakers. I did some reading and people say they sound best with tubes, and I had read elsewhere that the 230A has a tube like sound.
Hopefully they make a good match!

But Zappa will always be my favorite to listen to.

and I didn’t see that pic before, that looks nice.
Was thinking of doing something similar with the wood cabinet for it.

So it came in today and after cleaning it up for a while I’m hooked. Thing sounds great to me as I’m running it in a fairly small bedroom. Definitely a much better match to my speakers,
Has a nice warm sound but still a lot of clarity in the mix. Makes music from 50’s-70’s sound how imagine most people heard it for the first time back then.

That is very true, it’s just crazy how much this blew up in the gap of time that my interests were elsewhere. Kicking myself for not jumping into all this more when I first started collecting the media side of all this, pretty sure I’d have found a very nice set up for pennies compared to what a lot of this is going for now :confused:
The old threads on here of people finding this stuff left on curbs or in thrift stores from around that same time are the main reason for that feeling though.

anyways I’m happy with this
Harman/Kardon 230A I just got for the meantime to learn a bit. Very cool little receiver.

Sometimes you can luck out and obtain a sweet piece if you're the only one who's in the game for one...and know it's potential/price range.

Even at garage sales (when this Cov thingy is over) you might meet up with one...and don't forget the Local Face Book sales page.

Yeah that seems to be the best bet for finding a lot of this stuff, and probably in a lot better condition than most other sources.
Definitely will be keeping my eye out more now.

and I think I finally hit a luck streak but don’t wanna jinx it just yet. Found a pair of klh 5’s nearby I’m supposed to pick up in the am. Thinking those will put these Jensen TF-3’s to shame and be pretty appropriate for the current receiver since they both are from the same era.

also found something too good to be true, but I’ll wait to tell you bout that till I know if it’s real or BS.

Yeah I’m not too far from Chico, I live about an equal distance between there and Redding.

and what do you mean the Bay Area is subjective?
