New Leak System

Great score. i saw the original post and was drooling. I am one of a few on AK that has a Stereo 50 (see my avatar). Mine has 1 blown cap and all the tubes are either bad or marginal so I will be doing a complete re-cap on mine before I even get to plug it in. I got mine with a Fisher 100T tuner/preamp and an old tube Ampex R2R all for free. We will have to compare sound somehow to see which pre is better. As for finding info on the web it is a bit scarce for real meat and potates but there is a Leak group on Yahoo http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hjleak and also Bolly gave me a group in Hong kong where there are a number of Leakies including the moderator http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hktubeaudio. Here are a few more links that might be helpfull:

http://www.audiokit.it/ITAENG/UpElettr/LeakST50/leakstereo50.htm This is in Italian so you will have to copy the link into the Google translate page but is perhaps the best Stereo 50 rebuild in site I have found so far.

I also have the original installation, operation and maintance manul supplied new with the Stereo 50 and I purchased the Sams Photofact which I think has more usefull info that most of the others. If you want copies just PM me. It's good  to have another Leak Stereo 50 out there and in Canada too. Fell free to PM me anytime. Take the advice allready offered ie: use a variac or the homemade one to first fire it all up so as not to have a meltdown.

I'm glad you took the Leak! I have a stereo 60 that needs re-capping. I will follow along.

Thats a stunning Trio you have there! and it's not hard to bring them back to original condition (I've done it). From what I have read about them (and by having owned them I agree) The Stereo 50 is the best of leaks more powefull amps, bettered by the smaller 20. The point one pre is "So So" even after rebuilding. The "Star" in your pile must be the Through Line Tuner! Its an easy refurb just a few caps, The two slide switches and possibly some of those brown resistors in there, unless you are very good you should have it re-aligned by someone who knows about the Throughline! Fit a good decoder to it, mine came from "One thing audio" give it a healthy signal and you will have one of the best stereo FM Tuners ever made, Valve or solid state!
I have sold on the amp and pre-amp (to finance a Radford) but that tuner will never leave me!
Lots of info on the web about this trio, mostly agreeing with me, to be found

This is what "HiFi World" has to say about the Point one Srereo pre:

Leak's power amps may be great at their best but the same can't be said of the matching pre-amplifiers, the Point One and the Varislope. They might suffice as a stop-gap to partner CD players, but they are members of that select breed of British pre-amps that have an output signal substantially smaller than the line-level input. To top that, the phono stage is poor and the controls are noisy. The best thing you could say about the earlier versions is that they look nice.
