The C-200 is capable of plenty of gain...it just has a volume control with a funky curve.

As far as the power cable, my local hardware store carries an appliance cord that plugs right into the back of these early Accuphase units with some minor trimming of the molded end piece.

Yeah, I noticed that about the volume pot today. I guess it gets itself into the "sweet spot" of its travel. Who knows...

I went to Ace Hardware to see if they had one of those appliance cords, but they didn't. They just had those odd wide plugs with the round sockets. I had to hack up the HOSA cable and use an Ace plug end without its cover, hence the heat shrink tubing on it. It works out pretty good and fits nice and firm, for now anyway.

As for sound, I had it running all night long through the headphones and all day today as well through the stereo. It has definitely gotten more dynamic sounding. A lot more.
 
Let us know how it does with vinyl if you are going that route.
Good job on the repair work, BTW, you've got to love that clamping mechanism.

With three great TT's sitting here waiting, I'm definitely going that route! LOL I'll let you know how it sounds. In fact, I'm going to start moving stuff around today and get it hooked up into the system. I was going to wait until I got all the small electrolytics on the boards taken care of, but it sounds really good already and I'm tired of waiting. :D

As for the clamping mechanism, whatever works, right?! :thmbsp:
 
Just got done listening to Eva Cassidy's "Fields of Gold" live version...

Damn this preamp is spooky!!! With my eyes closed, I actually felt as though she was right in the room with me, about 10 feet in front of me!

This preamp is doing things I've never heard before in my system. There must be some kind of perfect synergy going on between the C-200, the Baldwin tube amp and the NHT 2.9's. I mean, I've gotten goose bumps from my systems in the past, but not like this, and not with chills to go along with it, and a constant grin. And this is all still just from using my old iPhone 3G as the source! I'm probably going to crap myself when I connect my CD player and put on a good 2-ch SACD or when I connect my TT's and spin some good quality vinyl! LOL
 
I'm glad such good sounds are coming from your C-200. I'm the one with the C-200X that exchanged messages with you.
I'm looking forward to when I can upgrade mine.

Yes, I will do the upgrades before it is used. My main system is in storage anyways until my home is finished (taking a long...long...time!).

Anyways, I have a nice VAC CPA-1 MK III tube pre-amp that is fresh from VAC, every upgrade they could think of went into it, plus a new set of tubes...that will get me by.
I also have a Harmon Kardon Citation II tube amp that I have purchased all the Jim McShane upgrades/mods for, I need to do this also as I had to sell my beloved Edge NL 12.1 amp to help fund the remodel.

I have lots of work to get done!

That's an impressive combo! It would be nice to see your listening impressions of the VAC vs Accuphase when you get everything reworked and set up.
 
I finally got around to installing the preamp into the rest of the system on the rack. I am using MC carts on both the Denon/Benz Micro (DISC 1) and Luxman/Adcom (DISC 2) TT's, however the Miracord is running a MM cart and will be connected to "AUX 2" via an outboard phono-pre.

If you notice, the Miracord isn't actually in the system at the moment because that Music Hall mmf phono-pre sucks. About a year after buying it new years ago, the left channel started going out intermittently. After trying it today, that channel is totally dead. So now I'll have to hunt for a small and economical replacement. Maybe that little Parasound one.

As far as how the built-in phono section sounds, I'm fairly happy with it. I'm sure it's not the last word in ultimate detail and such, but it sounds pretty darn good. Speaking of the phono section, what are those small electrolytics on each gain control in the back for? Would it be advisable and make an improvement on the sound by updating them?

Thank you for your kind words!

The system is completely silent on all inputs. The Miracord 40A is using a cheapy but surprisingly good sounding AT11E cart with a brand new stylus I just bought a few months ago and only used for maybe a couple hours. For the little bit that I played the Miracord today, the one channel sounded good. The cheap mmf phono-pre did have some random noise coming through as well as some local radio station!
 
Old thread this may be, but i just have to say i love the way this pre amp is assembled. I didn't know they made equipment this early with what looks like computer motherboard card swapping ability. Just pull the card, work on it, then pop it back in. AWESOME!

have you checked the digital docs section to see if one is there already? If not, try asking again there. Probably better chance of it being seen.
