Wow, incredible really! I was away from the PC for a day or so and there are two pages of replies to a rather mundane post. You sure are a friendly bunch.
What I've got right now:
Fisher 203 reciever
Gerrard 990b table w/ grado blue
Marantz SP 103 floor speakers (found for 35$ at Brown Elephant)
Bose 301's (mounted 2" stands in vertical position)
Sony CD changer (will upgrade soon)
Table gives me fits. I guess I'm a closet tweak- started messing with it AFTER the nice tech at Decibel set it up for me. Messed up and lost the screw for the tonearm lift mechinism. I don't mind manual- would like to get all the auto crap torn out of there- but now I have no lift so its touchy buisness. Sounds pretty good. Just yesterday built small 'cat box' filled with black sand to iso vibrations. Tracks fairly well <1.5g now. Still need to learn to set VTA, & azimuth. Visited the great Vandenhul resource and a few others, but my problem is I need gauges, and don't know exactly where to adjust both things on my table. Guess a owners manual would help.
Reciever is suprisingly decent @50w - 8ohm. Tried out an 80's model pioneer before this one and before my divorce I had a decent Lafyatte tube amp that I had cleaned and set up- (would have liked a pre-amp). Now the ex has it. Maybe thinking about exploring a rehabbed 70's era Marantz next.
The Bose 301's I inherited. For what they are they're okay. I understand the audiophile community isn't high on Bose. Tried them in a number of locations and for my room (high ceilings, lots of wood) I mounted them vertically as I liked the ambience and how the room treated the transients.
Besides Deciblel (who have suprisingly good deals on 70's-80's vintage stuff, as well as high-end ephemera), I've had luck with 20th century Stereo on Montrose. Not the cheapest around, but he knows his stuff and can repair anything.
Also, a special shout-out is in order for the Brown Elephant Resale shop on Halsted. They almost always have a big vinyl bin with rotating stock. I go every three weeks. Regular price- $1.00 a record, but lately it's been half off because they want to rid themselves of back stock. Lot's of crap of course, if you're looking for pop/rock with a few finds if you look hard. But if you're like me and search for classical LP's the word is your oyster! I bet 2/3 of my current collection now comes from there. Best part- all proceeds go to the Howard Brown health center- an AIDS medical resource center and hospice.

There's a Brown Elephant in Oak Park that I hit at least twice a week. Picked up several LPs (Kind of Blue for .50!) and some gear for cheap. As for repairs Van L Speakerworks on Western Ave is like a museum. He also sells top-notch equipment and is great to listen to.
