"New member trying to hook up with fellow PL Andromeda III owners"

Thanks ommp! - I just finished a five hour session listening to some of my favorite CDs. A few more hours and the re-coned bass module will be nicely broken in. I have made contact with more PL AIII owners this past week from your neck of the woods on this forum than I have in the past 20 years or more. Must be something in the air going around up there than never got down this way. Whatever it is it's nice to know that a few PL AIIIs are still alive and kicking some butt in the Pacific Northwest. I see you own a PL amp or maybe even two? Many years ago I had two PL400s, a PL4000 and an SAE MK6 tuner all rack mounted and running the Andromedas. That was a sweet setup. May have to attempt that again someday soon.

Regards to all..........Terry

Terry don't know if you saw in the thread on Dollars and Sense, my 6 foot Mid Atlantic Amp rack full of all Phase Linear gear. It is really a sight to behold at night with my amp rack lights illuminating all that nice polished aluminum and all those led red lights flashing.

Hi Ken - Yes I did see your rack mounted array of PL components for sure. That is some setup you have. I mentioned in a prior post that many years ago I had my PL 4000, two PL 400s, and an SAE MK6 tuner, all rack mounted and looking pretty. That is what ran the Andromedas back then. Now a big SAE P500 runs them. Wish it wasn't so far up the hill to Ritas, or I would run up there and shake a hand with Bob and talk a bit with him. He helped me a couple of times many years ago when I was experiencing some very minor problems getting mY Andromedas to sound right, etc. I am trying to get a picture or two taken of my current setup and will try my best to get them posted here at some point. I am sure enjoying life again now that my bass module is back up and doing what is supposed to do, shaking the floors and knocking down a wall or two. Damn it's nice to have the power to do that. The only problem I encounter is having the rest of electrical appliances and lights stop working whenever I am in my listening room listening to Bach's Tocata & Fugue played on a huge pipe organ, that I have on an old Telarc disc. Oh baby does that one shake the timbers and rattle the dishes out in the kitchen...................Ha! I am just a few notes short of being a bit sadistic at my age now as my neighbors all think we are having an earthquake. Thankfully they haven't said anything..............yet!!!

Regards..............Terry

:D  I listened to the first couple of tracks from Al Stewart - Year Of The Cat last night on the Andromedas. Pure bliss. I'm at the end of a cul-de-sac with decent distance from the neighbors split-level but still it was after 10pm. Good thing I was paying attention to the SPLs.

Hi SpeakerLabFan - I have that same album on vinyl. It was one of the greats for sure. Haven't had my TT set up for many years but am thinking about doing just that very thing and pull out some of my old vinyl discs and giving them a whirl around the platter. I have replaced some of my very favorite vinyl recording with CD versions but not that one...........yet.

Regards............Terry

I too have that on Vinyl, along with every vinyl I ever purchased since I was 16. prior to that I had a huge collection on 8 track, can't say I have any of them as those are long gone. I still pick up vinyl at garage sales, GW, and trift stores, along with the many CD's, not to mention Amazon. I really like Classical as well, and anything with violins and cello's.

Still trying to locate a PL A-III complete system in good working condition and shape, etc. Anyone out there with one to sell PM me and let's talk. I mainly want it to use the bass module as a second one in my current system and have the panels as spares, or as a secondary set of just panels alone in another room possibly..................

Regards to all..............Terry

I had to play Year Of The Cat again... yes, when the cover art is by Hipgnosis the recording engineer usually infused some real love into their craft.

Al Stewart - (producer: Alan Parsons - I didn't know that!)
Pink Floyd - (rec. eng. Todd Rundgren)
Yes -

I had almost forgotten, in fact I HAD forgotten "Year of the Cat" by Al Stewart. I have it on vinyl stored away. I think perhaps due to your mentioning it here, I am going to go dig it out along with some other LPs, take my Sony PS-2251 TT/Sonus Blue combo out of its wraps, and spin some vinyl again after many years. I have a fair sized collection of LPs dating back to the late 50s with many of them being on DG, Command, Shefield, and other higher end labels of the time. Just needed a shot in the arm from your post to get me off my butt and do it. Thanks!!!

Regards..............Terry

I didn't know that Todd had been a recording eng. on any Pink Floyd albums. Good to know, Todd was always ahead of his time.( and still is) And Alan Parsons...wow.
Thanks

I did some listening to the Andromedas today, and I thought I'd share a picture of the latest setup

Quoted from SLF above: "....listened to .WAV digital source by USB from laptop to the Cambridge Audio DacMagic. Herbie Hancock - Head Hunters. Stunning."

Thanks SLF, I've been meaning to use that word for a while now but for some reason it never crossed my lips. I have noticed at times and with certain CDs or recordings, the Andromedas are able to make them sound about as close to live as can be. As I mentioned in one of my posts above, I have a Nils Lofgren "Accoutic Live" CD and every time I listen to it I swear he is right there in the room with me. The guitar strings have an almost eery presence to them, that as you stated, really do sound "stunning"...................

Regards, Terry

PS: "Wanna sell yours???..............Ha!"

I have a set, but sadly no module. I bought them in '79 and powered them with a Sansui G9700 for some years and then switched to a Carver pre-amp and power amp (C15 and TFM25). They still sound good. I sent an email off to Rita to ask about some small repairs (mostly cosmetic), haven't heard back yet. I've owned a few sets of speakers, and these are still my favorites. - dan

Hey Dan - We got to find you a bass module!!! If you think the Andromedas sound good with just the panels, just wait until you add the bottom end!!! Are you by chance using a different sub with them and if so does it blend well? At one time I thought about buying a "ML Descent i" and trying it out but just did not have the coin to do so. If you do find a bass module you will no doubt have to have it re-coned after all these years but it will be well worth the small expence to do it. Glad you enjoy yours, most who own them do.............

Regards.............Terry

Sorry, I meant I have the three pieces (sub and panels) but not the EQ electrical module they came with. Bought them off the show room floor, the shop couldn't find boxes, papers, nothing. I didn't care once I had heard them. Into the back of the truck they went (oddly enough, in '79 I paid $1800 Cdn for those speakers, and the truck cost me $500, lol). I still need to find that EQ module though. - dan

I misunderstood module to mean the sub module. So it's the MCM you are missing. What that little "black mystery box" does is to allow you some opportunities to tailor the high, mid and low frequencies to your listening room environment along with adjusting and altering the imaging effect of the speaker design itself to where you can add to or subtract from the depth of the sound stage in front of you, etc. Some called it a gimmick or just some hype but the thing actually does work and when the Andromedas are set up properly you can and should detect a difference as you make the various adjustments. Hope you can dig one up somewhere as it just adds that little bit of icing on this speaker systems cake. Probably not too many out there being sold alone or if they are, I haven't seen one for sale. If you ever run across one, offer cash, grab it and run...............

I have a brochure - for the Phase Linear III Loudspeaker system - they called it "The Missing Third Dimension".

...achieves an unprecedented level of musical realism through:

  • Six to fourteen millisecond time delay.
  • Critical ambient acoustic sound field.
  • High power capacity.
  • Frequency range extending beyond the limits of audibility.

...is a four-way, four-piece system totalling twenty drivers, a five cubic foot sub-woofer module, two panels, and an Electronic Motion control.

By using 20 drivers, the Phase III is able to combine high volume levels with very low distortion over the complete frequency range of 24Hz to 20kHz.

The Phase III's subwoofer system yields smooth, accurate high level response, with very little distortion down to 24Hz.

This combination of large numbers of high frequency drivers and an elaborate Motion Control circuitry provides a new level of sonic accuracy.

----------------------
There's several pages of detail on the system including panel placement for short term reflections and reverberation echo, and a page on "transient ability" with a discussion on how the Electronic Motion Control module provides an active electronic speed-up circuit to acheive desired transient ability in the cone tweeters - which have also been treated with a cone damping compound.

I'll scan the entire brochure and get it posted here. I think Phase III owners will find it good reading! :thmbsp:

Very cool! I would indeed like to see that. I have an EQ in my system which helps in the speaker set up, and a Carver pre-amp that allows a certain amount of sonic holography. It would be nice to have that EMC module though. - dan

I believe I have the same brochure you have SLF. Got it back when I first looked at the Andromedas and took it home with me to read thru it thoroughly while making my decision to buy them, etc. Fun to look back thru every so often if for nothing more than to remember the anticipation and anxiety I was going thru during the buying process. I'm sure many of the other owners on this forum will appreciate what you doing here with this brochure as I would imagine not many others have this one. By the way, that "little black box" is fun to just play around with at times while listening to the various types of music as well as the recordings themselves. I have one pretty much standard setting for just about everything but there are times when I like to get "creative" with it...................

Regards............Terry

Wow, after reading that brochure I feel really good now.:nutz:
I feel fortunate to be in this small minority who get the opportunity to hear these speakers whenever they want. We are lucky you guys. To read his interpretation of what I am hearing and what these speakers are capable of is an added bonus as well. (I'll bet Bob wrote it)
Hey SpeakerLabFan, any chance I could get a good quality copy of that brochure from you.( Kinkos best maybe???) That would be a perfect addition, and hold an honored place in my collection. I would be more than happy to compensate you for any cost's you might encounter.
PM me if you wish and we can talk.
And Danb44, don't fret, you will find that 'little black box' someday. The MCM does have a midrange +- that my C- 4000 pre amp doesn't have as well as a variable ' Sonic Holography' dial that does give you a bit more freedom to tailor the sound to the listening space. But other than that, your 'Sonic Holography' and EQ should do nicely.

I'll keep an eye out. Now that I've found this sight, I've really redeveloped my interest in audio equipment, which had flagged while I was raising (read paying for) kids. - dan
