New Morning Habit - Classical Music and Coffee - What do YOU Play in the AM?

BillyBatts

ALOHA!
I'm mostly a Jazz lover. I've been into Jazz since my High School Music Theory teacher (yep, I actually took music theory in High School) introduced me to Jazz in my Senior year. I was hooked.

Most mornings for the last few decades, I'd rise, brew coffee, put on some great Jazz and get "Jazzed-Up" for my day.

The last few weeks, I have oddly switched to Classical Music.

Now, I've been a fan of Classical Music for decades as well, but no where near the level of Jazz, and I darn sure would not consider "waking up" to Classical. I thought a more upbeat music genre would be better in the morning.

Not so.

These last few weeks spinning Classical in the early AM have been awesome. It's wonderful waking up to Classical and Coffee. It puts me in a great mood and sets the day on a good path.

What do YOU play in the AM?

Cannot fault your style...
Coffee for the body...
Classical for the mind to appreciate...
Bitter sweet...

One of my great pet peeves is the assumption (not saying it's yours!) that Classical Music is soft-serve, ie: quiet and relaxing. All the music I first loved as a young teenager, which drew me into the classical music world and eventually into the profession, was explosively loud and energizing.

I learned through reading that Thelonious M. studied certain classical composers, and another jazz perfomer, was a fan of debussy , ( hungarian gypsy compositions ). i'm pretty sure i've read of others, but names escape me.

I can't stomach waking to the drivel oozing from my local Jazz station so it's the local Classical station by default.

What's the drivel? Curious. I have limited appreciation for really hardcore jazz (Ornette Coleman loses me) but I love girl singers, piano combos, and coltrane.

Often but not always the morning show on KEXP.

I tend to like classical more in the afternoon. Jazz is a night thing.

For mornings, I like Brazilian and Cuban music. It puts me in a happy and energetic mood.
To me, a lot of classical music makes me think of lullabies, or brooding. Both are wrong for mornings, to me.

The drivel:
-cornball jazz singers trying hopelessly to drape their vocals/lyrics around a jazz standard
- New York 50's/60's jazzy pop singers
- soft jazz
-Manhattan Transfer
-John Pizzarelli
-Jane Monheit etc.

I've come to the realization I really can't stand most "jazz".

I love piano music composed by Mozart, played by Vladamir Horowitz in the early morning.

Not sure why, but it works for me...

My Saturday morning listening is public radio (KUAC 89.9).........because they have the best of Click &Clack -The Tappet Brothers :)

I admit to listening to Public Radio on Weekends. "Click&Clack" and "Prairie Home Companion" and "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me" and "Whada' Ya' Know" are sort of staples for my weekends. My PBS Stations also do some good Jazz shows and other fun shows on Weekends.

But M-F mornings, I just spin Vinyl or stream (thanks to Amazon Echo) some music. And it's switched (obviously from my first post) from Jazz to Classical lately. Via streaming, you can find some amazing Classical music stations from around the world. Same with Jazz. There is a German Classical Station I've been listening to that is excellent, and one from Australia that really has awesome music for my mornings. Australia is still in their wee hours of the morning when I wake up in Hawaii, so I get their more "mellow" Classical offerings. Germany is 11 hours ahead of me, so I can get more emphatic Classical Music offerings from them if I wish.

I happen to really like Mozart, and I have for decades. But I try and expand the horizons with many other Masters that I have rarely listened to, but am growing to appreciate.

Classical music every morning for the last 30+ years, usually from my own music library. Great way to start the day.

M-F AMs, I usually listen to classical, Nightnoise (Celtic New Age), or even the music of Hildegard Von Bingen, especially suitable on Sundays…
Like some of the others, I also listen to NPR on the weekends; "Car Talk", "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me", "A Prairie Home Companion" & "Thistle & Shamrock"…
Been listening to APHC & Thistle for over 35 years…
