I just aquired a new to me power amp (Adcom GFA-555). I do not have a preamp. Can I use one of my intergrated amps as a preamp? Pioneer SA-7700,SA-7100, Marantz 1070, Technics SU-V707.
Which pre-amp did you use? Near as I can tell, the SA-7700 does not have pre-amp outs, and the SA-7100, Marantz 1070, and Technics SU-V707 do. The pre-amp outputs should be controlled by the volume and tone controls on your integrated. Are you sure you connected the pre-amp outs and not the tape outs to the inputs on the Adcom? If it was hooked up correctly, try one of the other integrateds that has pre-amp outputs to make sure it's not something else.
not familiar with the others but I have a pioneer SA9100, you should have pre-out main in RCA connectors on the SA7100, with a switch to seperate the pre-amp from the power amp, connect the pre-out to your power amp and switch the switch to seperate, hook your speakers to your (Adcom) power amp and turn off the speaker selector on the front of your pioneer.
Just a thought, but why not experiment with the Marantz and the Pioneer 7100 before chasing after another preamp? You might find that you quite like the sound with one of those as your preamp and be able to save some money that you could use on other gear or more music.
