New products at CEDIA

I am not up to speed with the historic prices of vintage McIntosh but wasn't it always kind of labeled the gear for "Doctors and Lawyers"? :scratch2: If someone is familiar with vintage prices it would be fun to compare. Here is an inflation calculator http://www.westegg.com/inflation/

I purchased a MC2105 in 1968 for $649. I believe I paid either $329 or $349 for a C26. In 2007 that would be $3,828.50 and $1,940.80, respectively. Everyone can draw their own conclusions.

I am not feeling the mini system. Looks like an overgrown MX406 (car stereo)

My lord, that's one *fugly* system. If you're going to do a two piece component system, at least make sure the components look right together. These don't. In terms of appearances, it really can't hold a candle to the all-in-one Dunhill Meridian system.

They may not be in the same league in terms of performance but the Dunhill-Meridian joint product does look very nice.

I was just waiting for someone to mention how "ugly" it looks.....+1 on that. :thumbsdn: ..... I now have changed my mind....looks pretty good after all...:yes:

If your going to have something with those beautiful blue meters and the green McIntosh logo.....make the mini a little more mini

Looks like the MT10 designer had a field day whilst drunk or may be Mcintosh has secretly hired Chris Bangle! :lmao:

On a more serious note, surely someone in Mcintosh noticed how butt ugly and awkward it looks?????? :dunno:

Well, taking an MA6300 as an example of a close match to an MC2105 at $4k retail in todays dollars and we are not that far off. :scratch2:

You may not appreciate Chris Bangle's design but BMW has enjoyed record sales. I doubt that is the case for the MT10. I am a little concerned with where things are going stylistically lately from the house of McIntosh.

There probably should be some premium for the autoformers that were used in the MC2105? I recall ron-c saying the cost to produce an amp was not very dependent on watts but rather the cost of labor, materials, marketing, distribution, etc.

I like your Bangle comment. It goes well with your next line "butt ugly". He took a lot of heat for the rear of the 7 series. This Mac unit is "Front Butt Ugly"

I am also worried about the stylistic direction of Mc. Me thinks they need to hire new help. Lifestyle products are all about style. Look at the Tivoli, Bose, B&O, Meridian etc products.

As for BMW, I believe they have enjoyed record sales in spite of Chris Bangle, for the simple reason that they are very good products in themselves. I understand that sales of the 7 series, for example, bombed in countries which tend to have a more critical eye for good car design. I would not include the US and some Asian countries as amongst that group of countries.

What's interesting is that if you look at the latest Honda Accord 4-doors, Toyota Camrys, and especially the Lexus LS460, there are obvious BMW Bangle design touches.

For what it's worth, some of the other Bangle designs are to my liking, such as both the original and second generation X5 and the 2006-forward 3 series 4-door, but then I'm from the US, so my eye for design may not be "more critical".:)

The new 7 looks great to my US non-critical eye. :smoke:

As much I would love to dive into this discussion, having owned three of Mr. Bangle's designs myself, it does seem to veer substantially off-topic.

Returning to Cedia... any word on certain other long-anticipated products such as a McIntosh BluRay player or the AP1000?

Point well taken!

I too am curious about any info on those two items!:yes:

Perhaps the new mini system would look better in person, kind of like MT10. When MT10 first came out, people also bash about it.

I am not against BMW, I have owned several BMW's and currently have 2. Handling they get 11's, styling better than most but still some issues. My next car will be either the 6 series or the new 7.

Well, the angle of the first photos of the MT10 made it look a lot worse. At least from front on the MT10 looks fine to me.

But geez, I can't figure out what's going on with the mini. And in general, I *love* the way McIntosh gear looks. But mini units really need a particular kind of symmetry, which just seems to be lacking here. The nicest looking mini units I've seen are the Dunhill Meridian system (I'm a bit too stodgy for the F80) and April Music's Aura Note system. Very nice designs.

I finally saw an MT10 in person. Not nearly as bad as the pictures. Still don't love it though. Tables have become probably the most interesting of all audio components in terms of design. Transrotor, Oracle, Avid, some Clearaudios, the top Pro-jects, SME's, VPI TNT, and many others design some stunning products. The MT10 is still awkward.

I have been a serious BMW enthusiast for many years. I have met Chris Bangle, a very interesting guy. I also had the pleasure of hanging out for an evening with Frank Stephenson the designer of the MINI Cooper, one of the most interesting people I have ever met. I am a bit of a design enthusiast and car design is arguably the most elite of all product design.

The 2002 BMW 745i was not only one of the ugliest cars of the decade, it was also horrifically unreliable. However it is by far the best handling and most wonderful driving car in it's class. The new version should be impressive. It will also have a much improved third generation iDrive (the first generation, still in the current 7, stinks, the second generation in all other BMW's is actually quite good and has been given a bad rap.)

I have had the pleasure of driving almost every BMW (I am in the car business). My favorite in both looks and drive is the fabulous 650i coupe. I have always been a fan of big coupes, I always liked cars like the old Porsche 928, big Ferrari coupes like the Daytona and the modern front engine cars, and most Aston Martins. The 6 is a big, fast, elegant, comfortable, wonderful machine.

That's my car $0.02. As much as I love cars, they are still transportation. My real passion is my music and my Mac's!
