New purchase 4900Z receiver worked beautifully...once!

Bought receiver and tested on AR3-a's and everything sounded great. Next day the unit wouldn't power on, but occasionally the peak power meter lights would flash red; but otherwise DOA. Any suggestions. Fuse looks good and I had it plugged into fairly robust surge protector.

On the face of it, it seems like you have been sold a piece with an intermittent fault. However, 40 year old electronics can't be expected to go on forever, and inevitably at some point will need some TLC.

Needs looking at by a tech, it could be something simple, but best looked over by a 'vintage aware' tech. Tech's who are not vintage aware will quite often tell you that it needs a new 'main board', or say that the transformer is faulty. ;)

Thanks John. I wish I had time to fully invest in this hobby and learn how to do the TLC but I am a ridiculously busy public school teacher! BTW I was curious what "recapping" an amp means?

Recapping is replacing, typically, old electrolytic capacitors.

What it is not, or should not be, is a "shotgun" approach to proper troubleshooting and diagnosis of the actual problem. That approach often fails to resolve the problem and may even further confound the problem by incorrect part replacement, bad soldering, etc.

Oh, I wasn't suggesting it as a troubleshooting, I was just curious as to the meaning of the term.
