New score - Boston Acoustics A150s - Need Help!

I'm glad you're hanging in there. It's tough following behind someone who's made a mess of things. And you're going to have to break a few proverbial eggs as well.

I'll usually try denatured alcohol as a solvent first. I'll also reach for a box cutter type retractable blade first for scraping old foam off of surfaces. Original foam usually comes off clean from the cone with gentle scraping. The basket is tougher as the adhesive is more rubbery and tenacious.

Once they're up and running they should be an interesting listen compared to your Elacs.

Yeah it was definitely a pain to try and fix the poorly done job. It's been a great learning experience and definitely growing my confidence in repairing speakers.

I'll probably try alcohol first on my next go around with it. And a box cutter blade is exactly what I used - glad to see that I went about it pretty well.

Just hearing one of them working was fun! Definitely excited to hear a finished pair

Do you have access to a soldering iron? As you're waiting for the woofer situation to resolve maybe play with the idea of recapping the electrolytics on the crossover. Parts Express Dayton/Bennic are fine. Think there's 3 in there.

Then again capacitors can cause people to go a little crazy. Well enough alone is a prudent approach too.

If you look for a replacement on ebay, make sure that it has the ribbed cone,
and the correct dust cap. I think there is one on there now but it is $59 bucks.

I'm thinking about putting NLA woofers in my pair.
Andy of BA designed the NLA woofer so there is probably a lot of commonality
between the two. It seems that the NLA has a bit more throw.
The round magnet Jensen version might be even closer to the BA.
I'll have to enlarge the hole of course.

The Advent Legacy 10" looks very similar to the original BA woofer.
Henry designed the LA for a 42 Hz Fc and Andy did the same in the A100 and A150.

I've got a 1983 square magnet a150 woofer right here. We've been PMing but.....

Pete since you've been so helpful on my thread I'm feeling generous!

@efrance45 it's your's for free

Dammit, and to think, I wasn't going to re-subscribe. I LOVE THIS PLACE.

Cool move, cwh!!!!

And I sold my pair of A150's recently. Talk about one stupendous all-around, no frills speaker. Good stuff.

Wish I could've gotten the same offer for my 150s missing a woofer. I really wanted to hear them.

More good news. I've been informed by the Mrs. that she in fact didn't toss my driverless A150 cabinets and they are presently in her parents garage.

So if someone can get me caps I will grab the crossovers and recap them if @efrance45 would like them.

I'll give that some thought! It might be another fun opportunity to learn more about crossovers. I do have a soldering iron - it's an old cheap one from a garage sale but it has worked for me soldering some speaker wires.

Thank you so much Carl! I'll PM you to get that set up :) I'll think about the recapped crossover offer as well, not sure if its something I'm into yet, but I'll let you know!

Thanks for more fascinating info! It will be interesting to hear how they sound if you go that route

The recap is fairly easy. Plenty of room. I got panicky at first, and I'm a complete novice, but I got thru it. Use hot glue to mount the caps in place, and I twist the leads, lay down the solder. Seems to work.

Best of luck!

I still have to recap my 150's - I even bought the caps. Too many projects.

I have a first generation pair of A150s with SEAS tweeter, light oak veneer and ‘wheat’ colored grills. One of my best sounding pairs of speakers!

There are 4 caps in the first gen A150 - two 60 uF, a 10 uF and a 6 uF.

In my case I used cheap Dayton electrolytics for the 60 uF (ok, 59 uF by 47 and 12 uF in parallel). I used Dayton polypropylene 1% for the 10 uF (this is the one that really matters) and a pair of 3 uF (in parallel) Solens for the 6. There is plenty of room to place these new larger caps. It’s worth it.

Looks good! Just curious did you notice much improvement after the recap?

Thank you for the pictures! Did you remove the boards or just do all of your work through the woofer cutout?
