New speaker legs

I am hoping so. I wish my cabs were a bit bigger. They are only 4.5 ft3 and those drivers really need at least 6 ft3 to breath proper. I don't think they will go down to 35hz but I do have 4 subs in the room if need be.

I am working at home today and every time a car goes by I look out the window. It's been a long 8 month wait.

What do you have the cabs tuned to? I built mine to 5 ft3 to make sure that will all bracing, driver displacement I would have a minimum of 4.5 ft3. I might have ~4.8 ft3 of usable reflex volume, tuned to 32Hz and I'm getting plenty of useful output into the 30ies, but I understand a different room can be a whole other story. Mine also have a golden ratio interior and that makes them tall enough to provide some more ooomph in the 80-100Hz range.

If you still end-up runing subs with them, relieving them of sub-50Hz duty might allow for an even cleaner sound and tuning can be brought up in the 40ies to have more punch.

In WinISD I have them tuned to 35hz. It is showing an F3 at 40hz. Will see how that sounds in my room. As soon as the speakers are done, I will start working on room treatments. I plan on going all out on the room.

Fb=32Hz for my 4.8 ft3 box is an over-damped alignement with a smooth bass roll-off, making the ~32Hz f10 usable, especially with room gain.

IIRC you have a different TD15, the X maybe? Might still be pretty close. Since they are relatively sensitive pro-drivers, a larger box is where it's at for home use, if you can spare the room. 10 ft3 @ 32Hz will play into the high 20ies and still have enough power handling to rock yer socks off! :D

Good call on room treatment, since the speakers seem to be an "all-out" thing to me as well. :thmbsp:

Yep, I have the TD15X. I had a choice when I got them reconned. The M started its roll off at 80hz in the 4.5 ft3 box. the X starts its roll off at 60hz but is only down 1db at 50hz. Here is the screenshot.

Interesting that when I hit "print screen" it picked up my second monitor as well.

AZ, I've read your post a couple times and still don't understand what the sentence below means. How did you arrive at your Fb? What does Over-damped alignment mean? I tried googling some of this but couldn't find anything my piuny mind could understand.

"Fb=32Hz for my 4.8 ft3 box is an over-damped alignement with a smooth bass roll-off, making the ~32Hz f10 usable, especially with room gain."

Over-damped means an earlier roll-off, but much less steep. IOW, a higher f3, but lower f10 for example. It's good for rooms with too much gain. I think it's fair to compare it to very good sealed enclosure bass.

Here is TD15M in 4.8 ft3 enclosure. Colors turned out crappy in this JPG, sorry. The yellow line is ~Butterworth, well-damped, similar to what you have. The white line is over-damped and is what I have. The orange line is under-damped and has a visible hump.

I guess to get true textbook alignements with different damping characteristics, one'd have to change Vb in addition to Fb, but this gives a good idea. It's also a good idea to tune low for power handling. My box hits Xmax at 26Hz for 128W input, whereas the orange line hits it at 38Hz for the same 128W. It will have lower excursion in the mid-bass though.

I arrived at 32Hz by modeling too, knowing that this over-damped alignement should work in my small room. I got really lucky with my shelf vent that it tuned to 31Hz on the first time around, where I had assumed it'd tune much lower for safety (better too long than too short).

Thanks AZ. I understand now. This is encouraging: You are hitting f3 at 58hz or so and are happy with the sound in your room.

I just got the drivers and they look very very cool. Can't wait to get them in the box. I asked John to only finger tighten the phase plugs but they are tightened solid. Any suggestions on how to remove them without damaging the cones? If I can get them out, I can mount the woofers and play they while waiting for the copper platting.

I'd try one of those rubber circles you use to grip stubborn jar lids. The phase plug isn't attached to the cone, so as long as you don't dig a knuckle into the cone when you twist, you should be safe.

Now you need those TD18s for some subs :D

Good tip Jeffery. I will mount them first so they will be stable and solid while I twist. I have 4 subs in the room now. Even tho those TD18 look cool as hell, I just don't have room for more drivers. In the old room? no problem. With this new room, I have to deal with limited space.

Yep, something rubbery should do and good idea to mount them for a solid grip.

Out of curiosity, how big is the room for these? Mine is quite small at 10'x13'. I might get a bit too much bass with a higher tuning and it would not go as deep. I don't use subwoofers, but since you do and your room likely is bigger, your tuning should sound good.

The room is 16' x 15'. We moved a year ago and my old room was 26' x 32' as was designed by Paul Klipsch for the owner who was the Chief acoustic engineer for Ford Motor. Ford contracted with Paul to do some work on audio in cars and as a favor he designed the addition to our old house for the guy.

16' x 15' seems small to me after that room but I am getting use to to. Also this is the first room that I have to "treat" so that is a whole new learning curve as well.

Holy crap, that room had some history indeed! :)

16' x 15' is not bad, size-wise. I do need a bunch of diffraction and absorption in mine. Can't go "all-out" on treatment yet as this is just an appartment, but what I have does help out.

When I said all out, I really mean that in stages. I'll hit the front wall, back wall, and first reflection points first and see how it sounds. Too dead can sound....well....too dead. Luckily my wife does not really care what I do, just as long as it looks good.

I am still waiting for my phase plugs.........3 + week nows! Hope tosee them soon. Your project looks absolutely stunning Denis!

Large and leafy plants can help out here and look good IMO.

Amen to that!

What a drag ah? I am actually surprised I got my drivers reconned as fast as they did them.

Sorry to hear that J. I've been a business consultant for years and I offered to help John out free of charge but I never heard back from him. At least we know he is not out of business.
