New thread - AT150MLx...

Okay, not about the table or the killer arm..this is about the AT150MLx that arrived today...

Original plan was to mount it on my office system so I could run a bunch of albums on it to break it it,...you will see how plans change.

First, AT does an incredible job on presentation..The outter box tells you what it is but open it up and there is a lucite box that proudly displays the cart like its a key to a top end Lexus. They also include a good supply of varied length screws and nuts - all in gold to match the cart...very sweet. Only drawback was BOTH sets of instructions were in Japanese so ...not cool

So I mounted it on my pioneer (also see pics) and it sounded SWEET...but man, I have to tell you..what a BITCH to align...the cantilever and stylus are as thin as a hair ...looks like an AR/XA tonearm wire...lol

But I did it and it sounded SO good...It doesn't seem to need a break in. So I removed from the pioneer and put on the good table with the AT arm...

All I can say is WOW..if its that clear, musical - with great bass response and no sibilance, I can imagine what it will sound like with about 40 hours on it...One worry though..that stylus is damn fragile looking so "No Ben, you can't play with my AT150Mlx...lol)

Pics please

Thanks for posting this. Does it track/trace better than the 440mla or just sound more refined?

Tracking is amazing

Just so happens that the first album I tried has a warp near the rim...it rode it it like nothing...i was pretty cool...currently set at 1.25 gr an .50 anti skate...this one is a winner..i say that not because its mine...i am very honest and you have heard me play down other carts before...i can't say anything bad about this...worth the money amd I know it would work just as well on my dual...

You want to see a tiny stylus

Look at the cantilever and stylus tip on this puppy...it is narrower than the line it should cover on my protractor !!!

So did a little rearranging tonight

The Dual still sits IN the cabinet but when I told my wife I didn't like the one I built siting way up on top...she suggested I move it to a place of honor so it could be displayed...I didn't question it...lol

Ooh, looks even nicer there! But a really untra-dark wood base would make it POP a lot more. And no dustcover. But excellent craftsmanship. (I know, I'm too critical)

When I make yours for your, we'll make it untra dark wood..lol...I have two other DARK WOOD tables...I needed a change...:D

Hey, and that Art DJ soundstage sounds pretty freakin awesome for $39

That platter wouldn't happen to be from a Sansui 737 would it. That cantilever reminds me of the one on my Nagaoka MP11 Boron and it's getting harder and harder every day to see it.

As cartridges move up in performance....and price....one aspect is a reduction in tip mass. So cantilevers get lighter, thinner, and even shorter. Getting them aligned requires more patience, and becomes critical to obtaining the full level of performance they have.

Which is why in another thread of yours I participated in, that I said I prefer to use magnification to align the cantilever to the grid markings. Like you say, the grid markings can actually be wider than the cantilever, and it is hard to see the shaft.

The ZYX 4D I currently have has a pretty thin and short cantilever. The Soundsmith ruby cantilevers are actually quite small also. But I found if you shine a light behind them, it glows and makes it easy to align. I also had a Dynavector 17D2, which uses a diamond cantilever that is 1.6mm long, that one was terrible to align!

Sounds like you are enjoying your 150MLX! I bet its a fine cartridge. I am curious to know how this 155LC I have coming will sound. I have not owned a MM since a Goldring 1042, which was about 12 years ago.

Nope

Platter, motor, strobe and pitch comntorl from a Dual 606..Like a rock...once the pitch is set, it seems to be always set no matter how many times I turn it on and off..I wish my 721 held speed that well..

@Mister Pig - I hear you...I never had trouble before this because I have those pin holes in my protract..with this one, I can't even see the stylus tip..lol..so I do use a magnifier ...but I also built one...I'll show it later,

Just installed mine. Sweated bullets. Blew away the hif news test lp w/vtf@1.65g, a-s@same.

Sounds beautiful, headphones or speakers.

Can I say...itold u so

Was just playing eddie money on mine..i could literally see where the musicians were supposed to be...she is sweet...but oh so delicate

yeah, I'll probably buy more of those. makes the venerable at440mla seem crude in comparison. I also like the thick body; better mounting onto a Technics headshell than other AT's, imo.

Really sweet combo, and glad you are tickled with the AT's performance.

I don't think that many MM's go through as long of a lengthy break-in as some MC's, but there will still be some, and the good news is, it's gonna get even better!

For sure, AT has never made many bullshit cartridges, that these like the AT150MLX, and some other older vintage models were/are true gems, and truly worth the money spent.

Damn shame I didn't buy one, or two, when the price was something like $249.
I still have two vintage ATs in the house though, the AT-15Sa, and a fresh in the box AT-20SLa. They aren't going anywhere anytime soon.

If my ZYX Airy 3X ever craps out, or I destroy it with an accident, I think the AT-20SLa will go on board my table until money falls from the sky for another pricey MC. Mark
